On Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 November the Lincolnshire Showground stepped into Christmas with its 21st annual Lincolnshire Food and Gift Fair. With 500 more visitors than last year, thousands enjoyed the return of the popular event which welcomed 138 exhibitors – 20 more than 2021. Highlights from the weekend included live cooking demonstrations at the Lincolnshire Kitchen stage from Great British Bake Off Star, Sandy Docherty, who wowed visitors with her cooking skills, making festive cheese bites using local cheese. Five other special guests also took to the stage across the two days, including Ruchita Green from Masala Masters, a company that provides a range of Indian food experiences, including cooking workshops, and Tom Remington from Strait & Narrow, a cocktail bar in Lincoln. Alongside this, there were plenty of workshops to help people get in the festive mood, including Christmas wreath making and table arrangement design sessions. There was also plenty to entertain the children in Santa’s Workshop area. Sarah Duxbury, business development and trade sales manager at Lincolnshire Showground, said: “It was great to welcome visitors back for our 21st annual Food and Drink Fair. It was another wonderful weekend and the perfect way to kick off the festive season. “Each year the event always proves to be very popular. It provides a great way to support local Lincolnshire businesses while also providing people with a fantastic day out, and this year certainly didn’t disappoint. We’re pleased to have built on the successes of last year’s event with even more exhibitors and visitors, as well as some very special guests including Sandy Docherty. “We’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone who made this year so special. We’re already excited about making next year’s even better.” For more information about the annual Lincolnshire Food & Gift Fair and upcoming events at the Lincolnshire Showground, please visit https://lincolnshireshowground.co.uk/ or call 01522 522 900 for further details.

Twenty years in prison for trio after man sustains fractured skull

0
Three men have been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment after they violently robbed a man for £40 in cash and left him with a fractured skull in July last year. Darren Dawson, aged 33, of Smith Street, Scunthorpe and Thomas Mobbs, aged 37 of Frodingham Road, Scunthorpe were both sentenced to seven years imprisonment. A third man, Zack Tingle, aged 27 of Berkley Street, Scunthorpe was handed a six-year prison sentence. All three men appeared at Grimsby Crown Court on Friday 2 December for sentencing following a four-day trial which commenced on Monday 28 November after all three men entered not guilty pleas at an earlier date. On Monday 19 July a man was walking home after visiting a pub on Oswald Road in Scunthorpe for some food when he was approached by the three men at around 8pm on Teal Street. In an unprovoked attack the man was repeatedly punched in the face as the men demanded money from him and attempted to take his bag. As the man had no cash on him, with broken glasses, swelling and cuts to his nose, Dawson, Mobbs and Tingle dragged the man to an ATM on Frodingham Road and threatened him to make a cash withdrawal for £40 cash before fleeing the scene. The man was taken to hospital to receive treatment for a fractured skull as a result of the incident. Detective Constable Scott Belton leading the investigation said: “This was an unprovoked attack on an innocent member of the public who was attacked, assaulted and robbed purely because he was dressed smartly, and they believed he had money. “As a result of their violent actions, these three men have left a man with a lifelong head injury. “I hope this outcome at court provides the victim and members of the public with some reassurance that these men can no longer cause fear or harm within our communities. “Violent crime and robbery will not be tolerated, and we will do everything we can to seek justice for victims to ensure our residents feel safe and criminals are punished.”

Illegal cigarettes seized in Grantham shop raids

0
Joint agency raids on two premises in Grantham have led to more than 10,000 illegal cigarettes, hand-rolling tobacco, 350 illegal vapes and cash seized.
Many of the contraband items had been hidden in elaborate ‘hides’ within one shop. The raids were carried out by Lincolnshire Trading Standards, Lincolnshire Police’s licensing team and Grantham’s neighbourhood policing team. At 28 Westgate, known as The Local Store, illegal goods were found hidden in three separate locations – in a hide behind a bathroom mirror, in an electrically operated magnetic lock beneath the counter, and under the counter floor. At ‘Baltic’ located at 16 Westgate, approximately 3,000 illegal cigarettes and 100 illegal vapes were found – mainly in the rear storeroom. The operation was a result of community and police intelligence, and behind-the-scenes work by the Licencing Team, which is a partnership between Lincolnshire Police and Lincolnshire County Council. PC Mark Barr, Community Beat Manager for the Grantham Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT), said: “We know that the sale of illegal goods like this is linked to youth anti-social-behaviour (ASB) as well as organised crime. “Disrupting that activity through raids at stores where we think there may be counterfeit goods puts an almighty dent in the profits of criminal gangs. Make no mistake, these stores can make up to £50,000 a week, so the profits involved in selling what is an illegal and often dangerous product are quite staggering. “This latest activity shows that we won’t tolerate this, and we will take action. We would encourage our community to continue to come forward with intelligence which can help us stamp out the sale and trade of counterfeit goods.” Principal Lincolnshire Trading Standards officer, Andy Wright, said: “This is another excellent example of the partnership work between Trading Standards, Police Licensing and Police Neighbour Teams. Many of the cigarettes seized were counterfeit, and many don’t include vital safety features which allow them to self-extinguish when not being smoked, making them a huge fire safety risk. “The complexity of the hides – both using electro-magnetic locks – in use in the second shop show that this was a professional enterprise with the specific objective of selling illegal cigarettes. “Increasingly, we are finding shops selling illegal cigarettes also sell illegal vapes. Some of the illegal vapes seized contained way over the legal limit of nicotine, with some having the same nicotine content as 150 cigarettes. “By tackling and removing shops selling illegal cigarettes, we’ve seen it can result in a huge reduction in general crime and anti-social behaviour in an area. We are aware of the concerns of local residents in those areas and, with help from our partner agencies, we are doing all that we can to help improve the quality of life in these communities.”

Licence trade specialist brings industry expertise to growing law firm as regional partner

Wilkin Chapman Solicitors has added decades of commercial property experience to their Beverley office with a key strategic appointment. Justin Graves has joined the East Riding of Yorkshire branch of the firm’s nationally recognised commercial property team following a year of incredible growth. Heading up the commercial property department in Beverley, he will embed essential industry experience from over 22 years of working in the sector to the department. The appointment is an encouraging addition to the department’s already firmly established team, which is ranked in tier 1 in ‘The Legal 500’ guide to law firms for its cumulative expertise. Growing up in Northumberland, Justin went to the University of Hull from which he graduated in 1991, before soon qualifying as a solicitor in 1994. He has worked exclusively in commercial property law since 2000, initially starting out as a trainee solicitor – or an ‘articled clerk’ as it was known at the time, followed by post-qualification positions in Hull and Sheffield. Justin Graves, commercial property solicitor and partner at Wilkin Chapman, said: “The lexicon might have changed a little since I began my career but the underlying focus on cultivating close relationships with business owners certainly hasn’t. “I’ve nurtured a lot of strong connections in the local area which will be a huge boost to the team, I’m sure – especially now that business owners are under more pressure with impending tax rises and public sector cuts. Empathy and understanding go a long way in building trust, and that’s certainly something I’ll ensure our Beverley team continues to lead with.” Since joining the firm, Justin has already been instructed for a multimillion pound acquisition of a property on the South Coast. The acquisition comes as a welcome addition to Wilkin Chapman’s growing portfolio, which has seen it ranked in the Lawyer’s Top 200 law firms nationally. Justin Graves continued: “I was approached to join Wilkin Chapman directly and I said ‘yes’ to progress my career and explore a new challenge. As the largest law firm in East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, they’re certainly well equipped to give me just that. I specialise in licenced property, which I’ll be underpinning as I lead the Beverley office’s commercial property team. “On a personal level, it certainly helps that the commute to work is now much greener and more pleasant than when I worked in more urban areas – something that’s also reflected in the office. They say the grass isn’t always greener, but on this occasion, it definitely is. “It’s a refreshing change and I’m honestly very excited to add my own expertise to the team in Beverley as we drive growth, which it’s particularly well placed for geographically, given its wide catchment area.”

Councils bring businesses together to explore opportunities in Lincolnshire Wolds

0
Councils in East and West Lindsey have invited businesses to be part of the opportunity to help drive the vision of the Love Lincolnshire Wolds partnership. Business expert and author Clare Bailey supported the Love Lincolnshire Wolds Conference to explore opportunities businesses can take during the current climate, and how collaboration can be key to success. A panel of local experts was also invited to talk about a range of topics including tourism support, digital marketing, campaign marketing, how to make sustainability a reality, creating bookable experiences and cycle tourism. Speakers were also challenged to provide two top tips that delegates could go away and implement as an action from attending the event. Cllr Paul Howitt-Cowan, Chair of the Leisure, Culture, Events and Tourism Group at West Lindsey District Council attended the event. He said: “The Lincolnshire Wolds is a key attractor for visitors to West Lindsey and beyond. I was privileged to attend the conference at the Market Rasen Racecourse, to hear from key speakers and local business about the work that is taking place. “The Lincolnshire Wolds is a truly authentic tourist attraction and contributes significantly to the quality of life, economy, employment and local community thanks to the partnership we have here.” Tourism consultants Keith Blundell and Richard Smith from TEAM Tourism also delivered a workshop that encouraged businesses to prioritise four core propositions, developed through consultants and research, which would then feed in to the refreshed Destination Management Plan. This plan will then help focus what both Councils, and the partnership should work on over the next five years. Cllr Graham Marsh, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture at East Lindsey District Council, said: “For anyone who lives, visits or works in the Lincolnshire Wolds knows how truly special a place it is so it was great to attend an event with people wanting to share their vision for the Wolds to help shape it as a tourism destination. “The tourism economy is more than just the coastal strip. The attraction of the Wolds also gets people choosing to spend their money here and return time and again. “It was great to hear from the key speakers, there was so much positivity in the room and it showed what a great partnership we have as we build on the success of the Lincolnshire Wolds to help shape an even brighter vision for the future.” Throughout the morning it was clear that working together was key to driving the success of the area as visitor destination. Businesses were also invited to be part of the Lincolnshire Wolds 50th Anniversary next year, which celebrates the designation of the Lincolnshire Wolds as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which was declared on 17 April 1973.

Million-pound chop shop gang handed 46 years behind bars

0
A chop shop gang operating a million-pound car theft operation, have now all been sent to prison for 46 years for their involvement in the biggest conspiracy Humberside Police says it has ever seen. The 11 men appeared at Grimsby Crown Court from September through to December for sentencing for their involvement in operating various chop shops across North Lincolnshire. Large quantities of brand new and high-end vehicles such as Land Rovers, Jaguars and BMWs, had been stolen, stripped down and the parts sold and shipped overseas. Five of the men entered not guilty pleas to the charges against them, with four separate trials all taking place at Grimsby Crown Court, starting in August 2021 and concluding on Wednesday 10 August 2022. Tomas Bruzikas, 34, of Hiles Avenue, Grimsby was found guilty of Conspiracy to handle stolen goods and Converting Criminal Property and has now been handed a seven year and six month sentence. Lukas Voveris, 30, of Spencer Avenue, Grimsby was found guilty of Conspiracy to handle stolen goods and Converting Criminal Property and was handed five years and six months. Guntars Dubrenieks, 30, of Wells Street, Grimsby was found guilty of Conspiracy to handle stolen goods and Converting Criminal Property and was handed five years and seven months. Giedrius Eimutis, 46, of Mulgrave Street, Scunthorpe was found guilty of Conspiracy to handle stolen goods and Converting Criminal Property and was handed a four-year sentence. Kantrimas Zukauskas, 44 of Wincolmlee, Hull was found guilty of Conspiracy to handle stolen goods and Converting Criminal Property and was handed seven years and nine months. Four of the men, all from Scunthorpe, entered guilty pleas to the charges against them at earlier court hearings. Sarunas Eidininkas, 27, of Somerby Road, pleaded to Conspiracy to handle stolen goods and converting criminal property and was handed a two year and ten month sentence. Lucas Lidzius, 29, of Ripon Close, pleaded to Conspiracy to handle stolen goods and converting criminal property and was handed five years and three months. Charlie Rhodes, 25, of Orchard Close, pleading to Conspiracy to handle stolen goods and converting criminal property and was handed a four-and-a-half-year sentence. Darren Watson, 27, of Queensway, pleading to Conspiracy to handle stolen goods and converting criminal property and was handed a three year and one month sentence. Following on from the outcome at court, Detective Inspector Mick Keech said: “This was a lengthy and complex investigation into a large scale and sophisticated organised crime group who used a range of tactics including keyless cloning devices to steal vehicles from hard working members of our communities. “Whilst they may have been operating a £1.2 million business which they reaped the rewards from, they left a devastating impact on the lives of hundreds of people who were left feeling unsafe in their own homes. “Not only did they violate their privacy by taking people’s vehicles from their homes, they also took away the ability for people to go about their daily lives, leaving many without their main form of transport. Not to mention financial repercussions. “I hope the outcome at court provides those affected by this gang, and the wider community, some reassurance that they are now behind bars and unable to cause further harm.” The first chop shop was uncovered by officers in August 2020 on Hebden Road in Scunthorpe, and led to a lengthy and protracted investigation, as Detective Inspector Mick Keech explains: “As part of the investigation, we uncovered six chop shops across North Lincs, all of which had numerous vehicles in various dismantled states and an abundance of car parts. “When car part dealers operate legitimately, they either keep, or sell the parts. However in this case, due to the vast volume of vehicles the gang were stealing at such a fast pace, they couldn’t dismantle the cars as quick as they were stealing them, and often parts were just being thrown away. “However, with expert assistance and collaboration with manufacturers, we were able to identify 72 vehicles, stolen from 17 different forces across the country as far north as York and as far south as Surrey. “Nineteen of the vehicles had been stolen from our force area mainly from the Pocklington area and linked to two-in-one burglaries. All of the vehicles were broken down so we were unable to return them to their rightful owners.” As the investigation progressed, 12 warrants were executed at residential and commercial properties in Scunthorpe and across the Humberside force area, which resulted in 11 men later being charged with various offences. Officers seized 208 devices including mobiles and laptops and had a total of over 1,500 exhibits in evidence from car parts to CCTV, with so many departments involved in the investigation, from the Major Crime Team, Operation Galaxy and the Neighbourhood teams, to the investigators in CID, the Serious and Organised Crime Unit, Financial Investigation Unit and Intelligence. Detective Inspector Mick Keech continued: “It is important everyone remains vigilant and takes steps to protect their vehicle from thieves, whether at home, work or in public areas. There is more advice in regard to crime prevention on our website https://www.humberside.police.uk/protect-your-vehicle “We are committed to taking down organised crime groups and we will always thoroughly investigate any type of criminality associated with them. These groups are a blight on our society and those responsible will be dealt with and brought to justice.”

First step taken to bring 21 new council properties to Grantham

0
Plans are being submitted this week by South Kesteven District Council for 21 new homes in Grantham for people on the Council’s housing register. The proposal, for land next to Larch Close on the town’s Earlesfield Estate, is reduced from the originally envisaged 35-home development following local consultation. If planning permission is granted, it will be a mixture of one-bedroom flats and two to four-bedroom houses, each with their own parking. There will also be an additional nine visitor spaces. A spokesperson for South Kesteven District Council said: “There is a need for good quality social housing in this area and we are putting forward the Larch Close development to help meet some of that demand. “These homes are designed to meet the Lifetime Homes standard and will support the needs of residents, now and in the future.” SKDC conducted face-to-face consultation with residents at public meetings as well as inviting comment by phone, email or letter. There will be a further opportunity for interested parties to comment during the upcoming planning process when any formal objections can be submitted.

New Theatre Royal Lincoln team up with EDAN Lincs to give the gift of panto this Christmas

0
The New Theatre Royal Lincoln are teaming up with Lincolnshire charity, EDAN Lincs Domestic Abuse Service, to give local families some Christmas magic this year thanks to a new initiative, NTR Wishes. The New Theatre Royal Lincoln believes that everyone should have the opportunity to experience the fun, spectacle, and escapism of theatre. And nothing shouts fun, spectacle, and escapism better than a pantomime. Unfortunately, not everyone is in the financial position to visit the theatre this Christmas, so the New Theatre Royal Lincoln developed NTR Wishes. NTR Wishes allows local businesses to sponsor families, through purchasing pantomime tickets for them. Now, the theatre has joined together with charity EDAN Lincs, who will distribute some of the donated tickets to families in their care. EDAN Lincs offers advice and support to anyone that has been impacted by domestic abuse; through its Outreach Service and emergency refuge accommodation, offering support to men or women, with or without children, who are suffering or have suffered domestic abuse. EDAN Lincs are excited to work with the New Theatre Royal Lincoln, and their NTR Wishes initiative, as this will benefit the families it supports who have experienced domestic abuse. EDAN Lincs are also delighted to stand together with the theatre against domestic abuse, raising awareness of domestic abuse during and beyond its ‘16 days of action’ campaign. These ticket donations were made possible thanks to the businesses which have already signed up to this initiative including Stokes Tea & Coffee, LCS IT Support, FFN Lincoln, Baa Baby, Ruddocks, BW Beauty, The White Hart Hotel, Twisted Tension, and Saul Fairholm. But the theatre does not want to stop there. If any local businesses would like to be involved in, or want some information about NTR Wishes, then they can contact Lee at the New Theatre Royal at lee@ntrlincoln.co.uk. Talking about NTR Wishes the theatre’s Artistic Director, Natalie Hayes-Cowley, said: “Our theatre family whole-heartedly believe that everyone should be able to experience the magic of panto, and EDAN Lincs felt like the perfect fit for our NTR Wishes initiative. We’re so pleased to be working with this great organisation who will help us distribute a number of tickets to those who could benefit from some festive cheer this Christmas.” Cinderella, the Fairy Godmother of all pantomimes, follows the theatre’s most successful pantomime to date, Beauty & the Beast, in 2021/22. Starring Jake Quickenden, Ian Waite, Kerry Katona and more, Cinderella will feature popular songs, dazzling costumes, stunning choreography, hilarious jokes, and plenty of audience interaction. The show runs from Tuesday 6th December 2022 – Sunday 8th January 2023, and tickets are available now via the theatre’s website and box office. If you are experiencing domestic abuse and need urgent help, please contact the Police on 999. For further help and support in Lincolnshire, please contact EDAN Lincs on 01522 510041, Mon-Fri 9am-5pm.   Image shows: EDAN Lincs and NTR. More than 20 arrests made in harecoursing crackdown

Lincolnshire Police’s Rural Crime Team made 22 arrests in November as they continue to target hare coursers across the county. As well as making arrests, 23 dogs and seven cars were seized in November. The majority of these incidents happened in the south of county, in particular the South Holland area. Superintendent Lee Pache, head of Specialist Operations, said: “This has been a real team effort and I would like to thank the public for continuing to report hare coursing incidents to us. The reports and patrols of our officers led to arrests, and we await the court appearances and outcomes. “We continue to build close links with our rural communities which has helped us build intelligence around where hare coursers operate and sometimes who they are. Some criminals will travel hundreds of miles to be involved and are often associated with organised crime gangs. “What many people don’t realise is that the hare coursing is a means for these gangs to generate huge sums of money through live-streaming their activities for illegal gambling around the world. This can fund other criminal activity. “We would urge members of the public to report any instances of active hare coursing by calling 999 or reporting online after the event.”

Immingham knife man sentenced to life

0
A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment following a “terrifying incident” where he wielded a knife in the streets of Immingham in September this year. Danny Whewell, 31, of Rose Gardens, Immingham, appeared at Grimsby Crown Court on Thursday 1 December after pleading guilty at an earlier hearing. Whewell was found guilty of one count of GBH wounding with intent and one count of threatening with a bladed article. On Thursday 8 September, Whewell entered a supermarket on Washdyke Lane in the town and threatened a stranger with a large knife. He then walked round the corner into a pub, brandishing knives and locking the door behind him. Whewell then stabbed a man to the shoulder. Officers quickly attended and Whewell was arrested at the scene. Officer in the case DC Emma Mclauchlan, who said: “This was a terrifying incident for those involved and will have also shocked the community, especially those who witnessed it. “Whewell showed a complete lack of concern for anyone whilst he was wielding knives in the town centre, before then locking petrified customers in a pub and assaulting a man, causing injuries to his shoulder. “Whewell is a dangerous man and I am pleased that he is now behind bars and unable to cause any further harm in, and to, our community.” On sentencing, Judge Michael Fanning KC said: “It was simply a random attack on a randomly selected member of the public. “You are dangerous. It is only a matter of time before the harm you cause could be very serious.” Whewell was given life imprisonment with a minimum term of four years.
