Selling frozen meat pies at room temperature has cost a Boston shop owner more than £3,000 in fines and costs.

Ilhami Dilner, appearing at Boston Magistrates’ Court, pleaded guilty to three offences of keeping meat pies at a temperature that might result in a risk to health. The pies were intended to be sold frozen, and carried instructions that they must be kept at or below -18°C. The court heard that food safety officers from Boston Borough Council visited the shop in June, July and October last year, finding packs of defrosted pies on the shelves each time. Despite being told to keep the pies frozen, Mr Dinler continued to instruct his staff to take packs out of the freezer and display them on the shop shelves. Cllr Deborah Evans, portfolio holder for environmental health at Boston Borough Council, said: “Food business owners who don’t operate within the food safety legislation will not be tolerated. “It’s immensely important that we protect customers from businesses which put people’s health at risk. “Our environmental health team work hard to ensure the public’s safety and are on hand to give businesses the advice they need to ensure that they are providing a good service.” Mr Dinler was fined a total of £1,740, plus £1,235 costs and a £175 victim surcharge, a total of £3,160.

East Marsh residents to get free home security gadgets

0
East Marsh residents are to be offered free security upgrades to help protect properties from criminals. The project is being funded by the Home Office and managed by North East Lincolnshire Council and the Office of the Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner. Residents in some areas of East Marsh Ward will be visited by Empower Community Interest Company, based on Wellington Street in Grimsby, to carry out free home security reviews and offer devices to improve home security. Councillor Ron Shepherd, portfolio holder for safer and stronger communities in North East Lincolnshire, said that the project was part of a wider approach to reducing crime and anti-social behaviour in the local area. “This project is being funded by the Home Office’s Safer Streets Programme, and it’s part of some wider work that we’ve been doing over a number of years. “Just last year, we carried out a huge piece of work in the West Marsh Ward to improve home security and bring communities together to reduce anti-social behaviour, and we’ve seen some great results. “We’re now looking to replicate that work in the East Marsh. “Empower will be knocking on doors in the coming weeks to assess home security and offer residents some of the latest ‘Secured By Design’ approved security devices to suit your needs and requirements. This will be things like additional security outdoor lighting, locks for windows and doors, alarms and in some cases, CCTV. “It’s important that residents feel safe in their own homes and in their communities, and we’re working hard to make that a reality for some who have had to live in close proximity to crime and anti-social behaviour.” The project will run over the next 12 months, and will see improved street lighting, vehicle recognition cameras, additional CCTV, alley gating schemes and support for local community groups alongside the home security reviews. Empower CIC Managing Director, Bill Geer, said: “I’m really pleased that Empower are a part of this project, having seen the success that it has had on the West Marsh and in other parts of the borough. “Nobody should feel unsafe in their own home, and we’re hoping that this work will help residents to feel reassured. “We will be out door knocking in the coming weeks, but residents can also contact us to request a visit.” East Marsh residents can contact Empower CIC to request a visit from a trained technician by calling 01472 268708 (open Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm) or by emailing admin@empowersocialenterprise.co.uk. The service including the fitting and equipment used is completely free for all East Marsh residents. The SAFER Streets 4 project is being funded by the Home Office, and is being delivered by North East Lincolnshire Council and the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Humberside, working with partners including Empower CIC, Vanel, Humberside Fire and Rescue, NSPCC, and Humberside Police.

Lincoln Community Grocery, supported by the Government’s Be Lincoln, Town Deal and in partnership with the Message Trust, will re-locate to a permanent premises in January after a successful 1st year.

The Store of Stories project provides low cost, locally supplied surplus or waste food that would otherwise go to landfill to Lincoln residents, with the aim to improve mental health and people’s budgets. The store recently celebrated its 1st anniversary at Central Methodist Church on Lincoln High Street and will shortly relocate to Beaumont Manor. Central Methodist Church offered its building as the pilot venue for the grocery, which has also aimed to address issues of food poverty and support communities by delivering free courses to improve mental health and skillsets. While the Central Methodist Church has provided a home for the last year, renovation on the Grade II listed building Beaumont Manor has now begun, thanks to £226,000 funding from the Lincoln Town Deal. This funding forms part of the Be Lincoln Town Deal, which has seen £19 million awarded to the city to drive economic regeneration and deliver long-term economic and productivity growth. The Town Deal also aims to address food poverty issues, supporting clean growth through the harnessing of ‘waste’ food and helping local people build resilience. The Store of Stories project was created to also increase collaboration with public, private and community sectors and providing opportunities for volunteering in the social economy. The Towns Fund will support 101 places across England to develop Town Deal proposals, to drive economic regeneration and deliver long-term economic and productivity growth. Simon Hawking, Chief Executive of Acts Trust said: “Every product in the store has a story to tell, whether that’s produce that would have gone to waste or items that were surplus to a previous supplier. “Lincoln Community Grocery goes beyond food. People are looking for smarter and greener ways to shop while saving money, the grocery provides that service. We also offer free courses based around cooking, life skills and financial budgeting to support the local community and wellbeing of local residents.” Liam Scully, Chair of the Be Lincoln Town Deal Board added: “The Towns Fund will help contribute to Lincoln’s cultural and retail offer, while developing local community facilities. “The Store of Stories provides volunteering opportunities and free courses to members of the public, to strengthen skills amongst the community. We’re delighted to support the celebration of the project’s achievements and longevity.”

Four arrests made amid hare coursing incident

Four men have been arrested on suspicion of hare coursing offences following a report in the Spalding area. Police received a report of hare coursers in Eastern Road at 12.02pm on Wednesday 9th November. Officers attended but the vehicle had left the scene. Following a short pursuit, the vehicle was stopped, and four men, aged 32, 37, 38 and 39 were arrested. Police seized four Saluki dogs and a VW Touareg. The dogs have been transferred to kennels and the four men, from the Cambridgeshire area, were released on police bail while investigations continue. Superintendent Lee Pache said: “We would like to thank the public for continuing to report these incidents. On this occasion we have arrested four men in relation to suspected hare coursing. They have had their dogs and vehicle seized. “We continue to investigate and respond to reports of hare coursing across our county. Offenders are often linked to organised crime groups and are known to commit a wide range of criminal offences against the community as a whole, as well as placing officers and the public at risk when failing to stop for police. “We will investigate any criminal activity reported to us and we thank the public for their support in reporting crimes.” Police continue to urge the public to be vigilant if they spot any potential hare coursers or anyone acting suspiciously in rural areas as well as the more built up areas. The arrests come just days after a dispersal was put in place to deter hare coursing.

£21k pa savings for Somercotes Academy following ground breaking environmental project

0
Somercotes Academy has invested in a ground-breaking environmental scheme which will slash energy bills and reduce its carbon footprint. A heat pump, thought to be the first of its kind in northern Lincolnshire, will replace the 31-year-old system to help provide the heating and hot water in a £520,000 scheme. Lincolnshire Gateway Academies Trust has secured the funding from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) as part of its Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, delivered by Salix Finance. The scheme aims to put the public sector at the forefront of decarbonising buildings in the UK. The school has also installed 359 solar panels at the site and swopped out all internal lights to LED. The project is expected to save more than 3,000 tonnes of harmful carbon dioxide being emitted into the earth’s atmosphere over its 25-year lifespan. Trust Chief Executive Officer Martin Brown said unpredictable and increasing costs of oil, together with the opportunity of funding, prompted the move. “Somercotes is our only Academy where heating is provided by oil,” he said. “We’re proud to be installing energy efficient, air source heat pump technology and showing our students we are reducing our environmental impact, something as young people they feel very strongly about. “The scheme will also help with rising energy costs. Oil for the old boiler system costs around £20,000 annually, expected to rise to between £25,000 and £30,000 this winter.” The air source heat pump is estimated to save almost £9,000 a year and the solar panels more than £12,000 through on-site generation. “With all the improvements, we’re anticipating a cost saving of £21,000 annually, money which can be used to benefit students elsewhere in the Academy,” said Mr Brown. Salix Finance delivers funding on behalf of Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and also offers support and expertise to the public sector to decarbonise, improve energy efficiency and lower bills. The project was driven by Rob Middleton, Facilities Officer at LGAT. He and Facilities Manager Mark Shadbolt watched as the £200,000, 7.5-tonne heat pump, was dropped into its position using a 75-tonne crane. He said: “I saw the scheme through doing some research last October and we heard of our successful bid in February, so it’s been a long road to this point. “It’s going to have a dramatic impact on our carbon emissions. The heat pump will reduce the carbon dioxide produced every year by 69%, preventing 98 tonnes going into the atmosphere annually. The solar panels will account for a further 26 tonnes and changing to LED lights 25 tonnes.” Mr Shadbolt said: “Seeing it in situ is a big relief. Rob’s put in a huge amount of work to get it to this point and we’re just looking forward to progressing with the scheme.” The switch from oil to the heat pump is scheduled to be completed in the February half term. The solar panels across three rooftops have been installed and are already generating up to 50% of the school’s required energy. The heat pump will make up the shortfall. Smart metering and a building energy management system will provide data to ensure the system is operating effectively. Fouad Amuni, client support officer at Salix Finance, said: “Working on the Trust’s decarbonisation project has been really exciting and inspiring. “They got rid of a 31-year-old fossil heating system and are replacing it with clean, energy efficient heat pumps. “They’re also adding solar panels and Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS). “They’re making a really positive environmental impact by saving over 3,000 of tonnes of carbon over the next 25 years and at the same time educating future generations about the importance of renewable and sustainable energy.”

Red Arrows pilot sacked over sexual assault allegations

0

A Red Arrows pilot has been sacked following the launch of an inquiry into sexual assault allegations.

Flight Lieutenant Damon Green was named as the pilot at the centre of the controversy, which is reportedly the biggest scandal in its 60-year famed history and was only appointed to the role of Red 8 last year, but then left for the 2022/23 season citing ‘family circumstances’ ; which could well be related to this inquiry. However, it seems the problem may be wider spread within the organisation as some 40 Red Arrows personnel, some still serving nd some former members, have come forward to accuse their male colleagues of sexual misconduct and bullying. The inquiry which has been launched following the allegations will investigate what has been dubbed as a “toxic culture” within the world-famous aerobatics team and has previously seen claims brought against senior Red Arrows pilots. The RAF insists: ‘We have a zero-tolerance approach to unacceptable behaviour. Following allegations of such behaviour within the Red Arrows, we commissioned a thorough and far-reaching investigation to establish the facts and have taken appropriate actions where wrongdoing has been proven.’
