It has been around a few years now as it was founded by a group of medical professionals in 1961 to raise funds for research into heart and circulatory diseases and today it’s just as committed to supporting life and being at the forefront of research as well as trying to influence work aimed at shaping public policy and raising awareness, and it also works with other organisations to combat premature death and disability from cardiovascular disease. The Foundation is run by a Board of Trustees who are responsible for governance and strategy who then delegates responsibility to an Executive Group and specialist Committee. Alongside the committees the foundation has high profile patrons: from 1961- 2021 HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh was the charity’s Royal Patron – currently the Foundation is expecting to appoint a new Patron in the near future – meanwhile they still have actor Gemma Atkinson, athlete Roger Black MBE, explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes and public personality Pippa Middleton, amongst others, as Ambassadors to help promote the Foundation. The British Heart Foundation’s main focus is to invest approximately £100 million a year funding scientists around the UK who currently invest in over 1000 research projects, and since 2008 it has also been investing in Centres of Research Excellence which currently involve six centres bringing together scientists from a number of disciplines to research projects to beat heart and circulatory disease, these centres are found in: Universities of Cambridge, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Oxford and Kings College and Imperial College, London. Also, in 2013, the BHF funded three multi-institution Centres of Regenerative Medicine using £7.5 million of funding for four years to help scientists to discover treatments for heart failure. Moving on to 2019, the British Heart Foundation Clinical Research Collaborative was launched, which was aimed at supporting the planning of high-quality national cardiovascular research, bringing academic groups and professional 53 Á © stock.adobe.com/chrisdorney 50-54.qxp_Layout 1 23/01/2023 11:40 Page 2Watch your profits grow www.mjp.supplies Tel: 01406 362325 Mobile 07702293727 MJPSupplies mjpsupplies For the purpose of importing and selling Algifol™ biostimulant products to farmers and growers of specialist crops 52 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY THE BRITISH HEART FOUNDATION DIRECT GASKETS LIMITED Contact us today on 01482 219655 or visit our website www.direct‐gaskets.co.uk Since 1989 we have been market leaders in the manufacture of Gaskets. There are many other important activities relating to this well-known Foundation as well which need funding, including: * Providing information to help the public reduce their own heart health risk. * Initiating campaigns to establish policies, reports and research. * Offering advice to those with heart conditions via their website, helpline and booklets. * And providing free CPR kits to schools as well as working with the Department of Health to distribute defibrillators within the UK. In 2020, The British Heart Foundation had a net income of just over £107m - but in that same year it spent over £93m, so fundraising is essential for its world leading work and this happens through various outlets such as the BHF being named the London Marathon 2022 charity partner. Other annual campaigns include National Heart Month (held in February when awareness of a variety of heart conditions are bought to the forefront), Wear Red Day (which is celebrated on the first Friday of February each year in the UK, to bring greater attention to heart disease as a leading cause of death) and being part of The Big Give/Big Donation campaigns (these help run fund matching campaigns for charities and foundations and special causes at key moments across the year by connecting charities to funders like philanthropists, foundations or corporations and the public) – all to help increase donations. Alongside these campaigns, there are monthly donation plans, legacy donations and the recruitment of volunteers to go out and fundraise and help in the BHF shops which helps increase retail sales as the BHF has one of the biggest chains of charity shops in the UK as well online sales too. The BHF has around 730 shops including over 160 furniture and electrical shops, here in Lincolnshire at least one shop can be found in most main town centres such as Lincoln, Grimsby, Scunthorpe, Gainsborough, Skegness, Sleaford and more, all helping to achieve sales of about 85,000 items throughout the whole of the UK and about £30 million every year. This year, one of the biggest Lincolnshire fundraisers for the BHF is at the LNER Lincoln City Football Stadium on Saturday, 7th May 2023 (3pm Kick Off), which is to host a charity football match made up of former Lincoln City players and playing against the British Heart Foundation Team, with tickets priced at £8 for adults and £2 for children (aged 18 and under) it looks to be a great afternoon out. More than £5,000 has already been raised for the Foundation and tickets are still available. In the past, the British Heart Foundation also launched The Big Beat Challenge, a global competition with a single award of £30m for a research team who finds a 54 Á © stock.adobe.com/Collins Photography 50-54.qxp_Layout 1 23/01/2023 11:40 Page 454 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY THE BRITISH HEART FOUNDATION Proudly serving the families of Gainsborough and the surrounding areas for over 5ȋ years With sincere empathy and understanding, .%*#ˏ"+.ˏyour loved ones as if they were our own. Heartstart was also a long- standing initiative that BHF started for teaching emergency life-saving skills to the public, introducing CPR and Defibrillator programmes, now called Push Rescue, it effectively supports millions of people to learn life-saving skills. The reasons why The British Heart Foundation is so important are many; the yearly number of deaths from heart/circulatory diseases in the UK has fallen by around half and the nation’s death rate from the same has declined approximately by three quarters, all adding up to make The British Heart Foundation one of the most important contributors to the nation’s health and one of the most important institutions to support healthcare in the heart and circulatory disease field. So, where possible, please take action as every little helps, from a £1 donation in a collection tin, running a charity 5K race in the name of the foundation, to learning where to find and how to use a defibrillator - all of this leads to saving lives in Lincolnshire and the UK. © stock.adobe.com/Ngampol 17 Market Place, Louth, LN119PD info@striacroft.co.uk 01507 604029 www.striacroft.co.uk Family Jewellers Established in Louth Since 1979 Large selection of Diamond, Gold & Silver Jewellery Nomination Retailer Agents for Citizen, Iron Annie, Zeppelin, Lorus & Kronaby Watches Pre Owned Rolex & Omega Watches Jewellery & Watch Repairs. This includes evaluating our own attitudes towards older people. E xisting advice can often have an ageist undertone, so this article seeks to reinforce the necessity of treating everyone as an independent individual, regardless of age or ability. Aside from the common decency of this attitude, medical research suggests that compassionate treatment, as well as continued accomplishment of tasks, can help reduce the effect of age-related medical conditions. The promotion of independence is key in supporting the elderly. If certain conditions (such as mobility) prevent people from performing everyday tasks, there are assistive devices to aid with these. In the interest of independence, the potential for these should be discussed with the individual, and the positives and negatives weighed up. For medically assistive devices, a consultation with the person’s GP is also advised so that all medical advice can be considered. For example, the installation of a stair lift may enable the person to continue using their bedroom and upstairs bathroom, thus maintaining their quality of life. Independence also includes being able to go out shopping or see friends and relatives. Lack of socialisation has been found to have damning effects (including decline in mental and physical health) on people of all ages, but elderly people are particularly susceptible to loneliness. Charities such as Age UK provide door to door transport services to elderly people, including the provision of wheelchair accessible minibuses. These can be used for medical appointments, shopping, and visiting loved ones. Age UK also runs a Helping out in 2023 56 Á Helping out in 2023 55-57.qxp_Layout 1 23/01/2023 10:11 Page 1Our care and nursing homes provide the highest standards of family-led residential and dementia care. Upon request, the befriender can also attend medical appointments with the person, or even accompany them to fun activities such as the cinema. GPs can also refer people to Wheelchair Services, wherein grants can be accessed for aid in purchasing motorised wheelchairs. Independence and quality of life is also about maintaining a good standard of health and fitness. Whether it is a case of getting into a fitness regime, or adapting one to suit individual needs, a level of exercise is always encouraged. Getting into fitness can be challenging for elderly individuals, but it is important for staving off mobility issues caused by a sedentary lifestyle, as well as diabetes and heart conditions. Firstly, one should consult with a healthcare professional. Before beginning any exercise program, it is important to consult with a healthcare professional to ensure that it is safe and appropriate for the individual’s specific needs and abilities. GPs have access to a wide range of services which can support people of any age who want to keep fit and will recommend appropriate forms of exercise. This will help to identify forms of exercises that the individual actually enjoys. This could be joining a community dance class, boules club, or even doing some gardening. Joining classes is often recommended for elderly people, as this adds a social element to the exercise. Finding a community and friendship will give the person something to look forward to, which is also likely to help in making a long term commitment to attending. Consistency is key, as the more often exercise is performed, the 55-57.qxp_Layout 1 23/01/2023 10:11 Page 2Funeral Services Our funeral homes provide the best facilities including private arrangement rooms and peaceful chapels of rest. It also lessens the chances of injury from exercise, as the body builds resistance to impact. People should also start slowly. It is important to start with low-impact exercises and gradually increase the intensity over time. This can include activities such as walking, cycling or swimming. These activities have less impact on key joints such as knees and ankles, making them perfect for building up a tolerance to exercise. Water based exercises, such as aqua aerobics, are considered especially beneficial as the water provides a natural resistance, making for a good workout. Aerobics means that the person is stationary whilst performing the exercises, meaning that it is viable for those with a wide range of mobility abilities. Local leisure centres will often run a senior citizen discount, making it more cost-effective for people to buy a membership. Exercises can be adapted for all mobility requirements. This is especially important for elderly people, as joints can become more fragile with age. It is therefore recommended that any exercise which puts unnecessary pressure on joints (such as sprinting or lifting weights that are heavier than what is comfortable) should be avoided. Once again, this should be discussed with a medical professional. Gyms also have experienced staff on hand to advise and support with appropriate exercises. If mobility is an issue, there are easy adaptations that can be made to common exercises. Range-of-motion exercises, such as neck and shoulder circles, ankle pumps, and knee bends, can help to improve flexibility and mobility in the joints. Furthermore, a chair can be used as a support for exercises such as chair squats, chair lunes, and chair step-ups. Balance exercises, such as standing on one foot or walking heel-to-toe, can help to improve balance and stability. These are often considered extremely helpful for those with degenerative conditions, such as Dementia. If pain or discomfort occurs, reducing the range of motion may help. A mindful approach to the growing population of elderly people in the UK is required. We should remember that everyone can play a vital role in society if we support them to do so. Providing transport services may mean that older people can volunteer for charities, or support their local businesses, thus providing societal support. More than this, elderly people are deserving of a good quality of life, and there are systems in place to help with this. Promoting independence will allow people to make their own decisions, to visit and support loved ones, and ultimately feel more fulfilled in life. © stock.adobe.com/Kzenon 55-57.qxp_Layout 1 23/01/2023 10:11 Page 358 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY COUNTY MOTORING The most affordable cars to run in 2023 58-62.qxp_Layout 1 23/01/2023 10:14 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 59 COUNTY MOTORING As the world emerged from lockdowns and restrictions, fuel prices – which had been at their lowest for many years – surged following a massive increase in demand. T he Ukraine war has exacerbated this, with prices touching £2.00 per litre in places – and they’re still not much below that now in some parts of the UK. In addition, the war has caused electricity prices to soar dramatically, which may be enough to put off potential electric car owners. But even in the middle of these exceptional times, EV recharging is still less expensive than filling up with fossil fuel. Sure, it can work out more costly to recharge your vehicle than refuelling with diesel or petrol when using a super-fast charger at motorway services. But charging at a leisurely AC charger, particularly with a subscription, will cost only a small proportion of what you shell out at the pumps. It is also worth taking into consideration that many electric vehicles are recharged at private charging stations – i.e., at work or home. And this method of electric charging is, by and large, the most economical of all. So, without further ado, here are some of the cheapest cars to run. All of the ones to make our list are electric – and, interestingly, not one is a Tesla.
