These include its X3 (xDrive30e), the X5 (xDrive 45e) and its new 3-series saloon, while existing models will get new and improved batteries to increase their range. Alfa Romeo Alfa Romeo is currently parading its Tonale – an SUV which is smaller than its Stelvio. It is the firm’s first plug-in hybrid, and it can run on the electric motor alone. Alfa is almost certain to put this, or at least something similar, into production but, for now, exactly when is unknown. Peugeot In the ‘everyday car category’, Peugeot has recently unveiled its e-208 model which, hardly surprisingly, is an electric version of its fuel-drinker 208 supermini. Most striking about the Peugeot is not so much the car itself, but its ability to quick-charge, as Peugeot claims to be able to charge the battery to 80 per cent in just half an hour. Mercedes EQV68-71.qxp_Layout 1 15/04/2019 12:10 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 71COUNTY MOTORINGMercedes-Benz Mercedes has now taken the covers off its concept EQV – an electric people-carrier with a range of 240 miles and the ability to transport up to eight people. It only has a top speed of about 100mph but, in a vehicle so big, that’ll be more than sufficient. That’s as long it can harness enough power to move it from a standing start with a full load of people. Renault Finally, Renault’s Clio e-Tech is due to make its debut next year. The French automotive firm claims fuel economy will improve by up to 40 per cent over its existing line-up, with a 1.6-litre petrol engine mated to an electric motor and an automatic gearbox. Renault isn’t planning an all-electric version yet as it already offers the Zoe for that. And that appears to be the firm’s primary focus for now in terms of purely engineless cars.Renault Clio e-TechPeugeot e-20868-71.qxp_Layout 1 15/04/2019 12:10 Page 472 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAYCOUNTY MOTORINGBeneath the bonnet you’ll discover a huge re-engineered 6.0-litre W12 powerplant, providing 635ps of clout. Inside, the cockpit is a sensory pleasure, with chrome-trimmed, wood-panelled, deep-piled, leather-clad sumptuousness. So, be warned - if you prefer an avant-garde design over the look and feel of a vintage living room, this Bentley may not be your cup of tea. A completely configurable digital instrument panel supersedes the last model’s analogue chronometers in front of the driver, operating similarly to the Virtual Cockpit in Audi’s latest cars. You can set the digital system to show analogue dials at maximum scale with centrally placed satellite-navigation mapping or infotainment information. Alternatively, you can have that secondary display set to a bigger size instead of the Bentley’s water temperature gauge and rev counter. Rear passenger room is fine for kids on booster seats or even teens, but it’s tight for bigger adults. Mind you; you’d expect that in a 2+2 coupe. Then there’s the A fresh platform has enabled Bentley’s two-door GT to expand in every dimension but most markedly between the axles, where over 100mm has been inserted to the wheelbase. 72-73.qxp_Layout 1 15/04/2019 12:12 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 73COUNTY MOTORINGboot, which is surprisingly large enough to swallow two suitcases and a trio of small holdalls. However, it is the luxuriance of the materials that puts the Continental GT on a pedestal. Those beautiful wood veneers, gleaming metal trims and the diamond-knurled gilt on the switchgear are tangible highpoints. It’s evident that Bentley is no longer willing to come second best to Aston Martin, or other producers of large GT coupés in any assessment of unadorned acceleration. And, for now, it needn’t worry. On a perfectly straight, dry road, and wholly regulated by its launch control technology, the 207mph Bentley Continental GT will get to 62mph in 3.7 seconds from rest. What’s more, it’ll manage 30mph to 70mph in under 3 seconds. The coupe’s acceleration never feels vicious or undomesticated, though, and remains more impressive for the type of colossal and confident mid-range pull that makes 2.3 tonnes of metal seem irrelevant under power.Fast Facts Max speed: 207 mph 0-62 mph: 3.7 seconds Combined mpg: 23.2 Engine layout: 5.998cc 12-cylinder turbo petrol Max. power (PS): 635 CO2: 278 g/km Price: £156,70072-73.qxp_Layout 1 15/04/2019 12:12 Page 2Stamford Tuesday 7 May Literature at Lunchtime: Gulliver’s Travels, Stamford Theatre This talk will explore the iconic story of Gulliver’s Travels from acclaimed Irish satirist Jonathon Swift.
