< Previous10 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HOMES Tucked away on the edge of the village of Owmby-by-Spital is a three storey barn conversion, impeccably transformed for luxurious and comfortable living. U pon seeing The Byre — an Old English phrase for cow shed — it comes as no surprise that the current owner is an experienced interior designer, with so many thoughtful choices including nods to the property’s past with its industrial-inspired colour pallet and decor, carefully balanced with the rustic feel of exposed stone, earthy brown and grey tones and an air of modernity and functionality. Having now lived at The Byre for almost five years, upon initial viewing the owner saw its enormous potential, going on to redesign, reconfigure and renovate the home extensively into what stands today, offering 4,000 sq ft of living accommodation over three floors. “I love barn conversions, and as soon as we saw The Byre I knew we could do a lot with it,” the owner said. “It was a bit of a mess when we bought it, requiring quite a lot of work, and the layout was terrible, so we swapped it all around. Where the kitchen is now, for instance, was previously a sitting room, and when we arrived it had little piddly bedrooms for such a large property, so we’ve created four spacious bedrooms, all with ensuites.” The substantial works also saw the roof, wiring, plumbing, and boiler replaced in the 200 year old building. Though the home itself is undoubtedly beautiful, the plot on which is sits is additionally ideal, with views across open fields and onto the Lincolnshire Wolds, and the centre of Lincoln being just a 20 minute drive away. The property is also highly private despite its village location, A luxurious A luxurious 10-15.qxp_Layout 1 17/04/2023 15:37 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 11 HOMES with double iron gates at the entrance giving access to the abode and secluded grounds. Taking a tour of the property, a sweeping paved reception driveway leads to the main entrance and provides access to the detached garage block with utility room, office, and gym, and onto the landscaped wraparound grounds. There is plenty of room for parking here, with the owner noting that you can accommodate around 10 cars on the drive. The owner laughed: “With the glow of the house in the evening when it is all lit up, and the palm tree in front of it, visitors often share that it looks like a boutique hotel when they drive in and feel as though they are in the south of France!” One enters the home through large, barn style bespoke double doors set in a shaped, fully double glazed arched surround. Beginning in the tiled reception hallway, flooded with natural light, the bespoke hardwood and glass feature staircase immediately draws the eye as it spirals up to the first and second floors. From here, one can explore the kitchen, to the right, or sitting room/“winter room,” to the left. The kitchen is the owner’s favourite room in the home, designed in collaboration with Andy Gough of Chris Strange Kitchens. “With two designers working together we came up with some really good ideas,” the owner said. The ‘Silestone by Cosentino’ kitchen space has been designed to maximise the storage space available whilst keeping the room’s aesthetic impact. It includes fully tiled flooring, complimenting up- stands and a feature wall with three inset ‘Samsung’ appliances, with an oven, grill combination microwave oven, and plate- warming drawer. There are also lovely exposed rustic beams to the ceiling. The room further features recessed down- lighting, and two industrial chandeliers hang over the solid silestone focal central 12 Á 10-15.qxp_Layout 1 17/04/2023 15:37 Page 212 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HOMES island — complete with concealed electric points, sunken sink unit, concealed storage units to the breakfast bar side and drawers, further units and an integral dishwasher to the other. There is additionally an integral full length glass fronted ‘Fisher and Paykel’ drinks/wine cooling fridge in the kitchen, two ‘Fisher and Paykel’ fridge/freezers, and fitted larder style kitchen units to either side. To the long side of the kitchen runs a range of fitted units with contrasting silestone topped work- surfaces, ‘Samsung’ touch operated induction hob with complimenting black glass finished extractor and up-stand above and contrasting textured/beaten metal effect finished drawer units. An exposed stone feature arch connects to the dining room and a slight step up leads to the living room, or “summer room.” Ideal for entertaining, the dining room offers views across the gardens to the front and side elevations and French style doors open to the front gardens. “We like to host parties,” the owner noted, “so we dance the night away in the kitchen, which leads perfectly straight into the dining room with its huge table. Then you also have five or six seats of space at the breakfast bar. It’s excellent for gathering all your friends and family together; it’s a good party house!” The living room, meanwhile, with its oak laminate flooring, is referred to as the summer room by the owner, thanks 10-15.qxp_Layout 1 17/04/2023 15:37 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 13 HOMES to its bright dual aspect views across the gardens and bespoke double glazed French style doors opening onto the walled rear garden. A spiral staircase sits in one corner giving access to a bedroom, which with its own ensuite and dedicated stairs, feels like a private suite. Travelling back through the home and across the reception hallway, the sitting room waits to be explored, referred to as the winter room by the owner, due to its cosy feel thanks to the inglenook style feature fireplace with exposed stonework and flagstone hearth, rustic exposed beam mantle and inset multi-fuel burner and further rustic exposed ceiling beams. Off the winter room is the study, nestled away from the rest of the abode to provide a quiet work space, and on from here is a cloakroom with bidet, WC, and a unique free-standing font style marbled and textured sink. Ascending to the first floor landing, two bedrooms can be discovered with a range of ‘Hammonds’ fitted bedroom furniture and their own luxury ensuites with delightful blown glass mosaic style details and handy display/toiletry alcoves. The front gardens are set predominately to lawn, slightly raised from the main drive and bordered by well stocked flower beds, sweeping to the double doors near the dining room. There are also a wealth of trees, from the enormous spruce, the stunning cherry blossom, and magnolia to the copper beech. A gate opens onto a secret side garden area, a private paved, raised terrace that the owner calls their “gin and tonic area,” placing corner settees and rugs in the space for relaxing evenings. Meanwhile steps lead onto the main rear garden that can be accessed via the double doors from the living room, which presents a paved patio sun terrace and further lawns with well stocked borders and large rockery style central feature bed. Having completely overhauled the home and enjoyed his time in it, the owner is now seeking out a new project and adventure. Mainly a self-taught artist, it wasn’t until the birth of her second son that she decided to leave the corporate world behind and focus on art. She began experimenting with acrylics, painting large abstract swirl images on large-scale canvases. The first show was a sell out and Kealey knew the mix of dream Like a 16-17.qxp_Layout 1 17/04/2023 15:38 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 17 ARTISTIC LINCOLNSHIRE THE LITTLE RED GALLERY Love art? These designs naturally evolved and Kealey began working on her ‘Energy Collection’. These were inspired by dream-like images based on how you feel rather than what you see around you, fluid pieces with no beginning and no end and using colour theory to focus on moods. Kealey then started to incorporate new forms of mixed media into her work, such as hand cut glass and Swarovski crystal embellishments. Her recent collections are on a much smaller scale, featuring multi-coloured trees and flowers, and with a more romantic twist through the use of hand made hearts. Kealey says: “I love colour, reflections and fluid movements, I want people to be captivated by what they see and hope to make people feel good through my art.” If you’d like to see Kealey’s work for yourself, head down to Lincoln’s Little Red Gallery 16-17.qxp_Layout 1 17/04/2023 15:38 Page 218 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY W e are used to having bank holidays in May but this year we have an extra one, due to The Coronation. You may have a get-together with your neighbours for The Coronation Big Lunch, have family and friends over, or decide to have a quiet and relaxing weekend. However you decide to spend your extra bank holiday weekend I am sure, especially if the weather is good, you will venture out into your garden at some point! If you need to get your garden ready for a party or want to know what you could be doing in your garden over that weekend, then I have some ideas for you. Weeding is one of those continual jobs, but when it is done your boarders and beds can look great. While it can be time consuming hand weeding can be better than using a hoe as weeds can retake in the moist soil. If you want to cut down on the weeding then you can use weed control fabric and gravel or you may prefer bark mulch, depending on your garden and tastes. Do not be tempted to use grass clippings as mulch as it will poison your plants. Lawns should generally be mown weekly or fortnightly between March and October to keep them neat and in good condition. You will want to leave it longer between mows when there is a drought. You could also consider joining in with the ‘No Mow May’. As the name suggests you simply stop mowing in May to allow the wild plants already in your lawn to grow up and flower. They attract pollinating insects and other wildlife. You can leave your whole lawn uncut, or just a section. Now is the time for the ‘Chelsea Chop’. Ed Fuller from Fullers Landscaping helps you get your garden Coronation ready. It is where you limit the size and control of the flowering season of many herbaceous plants. It helps keep the taller, last flowering perennials from leaning. You can find much more information about the Chelsea Chop online. Finally, if you want to add some colour to your garden this is the perfect time to create your hanging baskets. Always make sure you use good quality compost and plant up around the sides of the basket. You could also use slow release fertiliser and water-retaining crystals in the compost as this will make it easier to care for them in the summer. Remember to keep taking off the dead flowers to encourage more to grow on.
