It might be tempting to cast off these promises as easier made than kept, if not for the dedication our new monarch has already shown to supporting our industries and tapestry of local cultures over the years. As our country approaches Charles’ coronation, it behoves us all to look back over his life and career for its examples of forging connections across communities, and how we prove ourselves strongest when united in inspiring each other. Born in 1948, Charles was educated at home by private tutors and later attended Trinity College, Cambridge, where he studied history. It’s from here on out that he began to live a life aligned with the working landscape of Lincolnshire, as afterwards he served in both the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force. Beginning as a Navy sub-lieutenant in 1971, he transferred to the RAF in 1974 and served there for several years, in part as a flight commander on the Search and Rescue Force, and eventually rising to the rank of squadron leader. This military service was a significant part of King Charles’ early life, giving him a valuable insight into the challenges faced by the armed forces. He has remained a strong supporter of the armed forces ever since, showing how deeply he values those who inherit and continue this work in his visits to bases, and participation in raising awareness of military charities. A venture to the Royal Air Force College at RAF Cranwell in 2022 exemplified His Majesty’s standing in support of martial Lincolnshire, our county with its scattering of RAF stations including one of the UK’s most bustling in Waddington. The visit marked the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the college, which has played a key role in training generations of officers since its founding in 1922. During his visit, the God save the king A momentous occasion, Lincolnshire Today explores the coronation of King Charles III, his longstanding support of our county, and what the future holds. 24 Á 22-31.qxp_Layout 1 17/04/2023 15:44 Page 224 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY CELEBRATING LINCOLNSHIRE King was given a tour of the college and its facilities, including its museum, which showcases the history of the Royal Air Force and its contributions to national defence. He was also given a demonstration of some of the college’s training activities, including displays of the college’s flight simulators and a flypast by a Tucano aircraft. All ceremony and spectacle was rolled out for the occasion on both sides, topped off by King Charles personally presenting the college with a new flag. But while there he met with a select few of the current cadets, who gave him a tour of their living quarters and talked to him about their experiences and aspirations. Such attention to connection with the people, and cognisance of his duty as a role model as much as a figurehead, has become a recognised value of our King’s from his extended term as a Prince of our country through to his claiming of the crown. As far back as 1979 on a visit to Lincoln Cathedral, Charles has been showing his interest in the history and culture of Lincolnshire. At the time, the cathedral was undergoing a major restoration project, and so he brought along his fascination with architecture and historic buildings to inspect the new roof timbers, and to see the progress of the restoration work. Given a tour of the building by the Dean and Chapter, he was shown the intricate carvings and other features of the building, taking a climb to the top of the cathedral’s tower to enjoy the sweeping views of the countryside. Leaving his signature in the distinguished visitor’s book and seen off by the peal of the cathedral bells, his footprint in the building meant that a swathe of news readers were made aware of the Lincoln Cathedral restoration project. A second tour of the beloved historic landmark in 2011, this time joined by his wife Camilla Parker Bowles, saw him accept an invitation to become the Patron of the Cathedral Fabric Fund, which supports the conservation of the cathedral materials © stock.adobe.com/ink drop 26 Á 22-31.qxp_Layout 1 17/04/2023 15:44 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 25 “For those times when you need a helping hand on farm or on land” 4 Church Road | Wittering | Peterborough | PE8 6AG Tel: 01780 782924 | Mobile: 07860 608825 enquiries@kevinjohnsoncontracting.co.uk www.kevinjohnsoncontracting.co.uk l Lime spreading (Lime stone and Lime x70) and can arrange soil testing with GPS l Fertilizer spread including variable rates l Drilling with 6 metre tine drill l 220 hp tractor and driver l 8 row Maize drill l Mowing with Triple mowers (with or without conditioner) 17 Market Place, Louth, LN119PD info@striacroft.co.uk 01507 604029 www.striacroft.co.uk Family Jewellers Established in Louth Since 1979 Large selection of Diamond, Gold & Silver Jewellery Nomination Retailer Agents for Citizen, Iron Annie, Zeppelin, Lorus & Kronaby Watches Pre Owned Rolex & Omega Watches Jewellery & Watch Repairs. While there, both Charles and Camilla were introduced to participants of the Prince’s Foundation, which had been working with the cathedral on a project to conserve and repair the historic fabric of the building. The international foundation was set up by the former Prince of Wales in 1986, its mission to support the development of sustainable communities, and promote traditional craftsmanship, architecture and design through restoration and training programmes. The foundation’s emphasis on “building with nature”, in order to preserve and encourage constructions in harmony with their natural surroundings, has proved an enduring testament to King Charles’ passion for environmental advocacy. Amongst its greatest achievements are the Natural House, which is a model for sustainable, energy- efficient housing, and the Dumfries House Estate, a working farm and educational centre that promotes sustainable agriculture and rural skills. On home turf, the organisation restored the Grade II listed St. John’s Hospital in Louth and developed a sustainable agri- food hub with the help of farmers and food producers in Holbeach. Both have become lively community centres in their own rights, and all while an overhaul of housing, commercial development and public spaces happens across the entirety of North Lincolnshire with foundation backing. A broader boost for the farming trade integral to Lincolnshire life came with the launch of the Farm Resilience Programme, the success of which Charles celebrated with a visit to Louth Livestock Market in 2018. Opened at its current Newmarket site in 1983, but running since long before, the market used to be a bustling centre of farming trade. However, the area was devastated by the 2001 foot and mouth outbreak, and was only saved from closure in 2017 by the devotion of campaigners in the local community, and of king Charles himself. He pledged his support, thanks and congratulations during his visit to this last market of its kind in Lincolnshire, expressing his “enormous pleasure” at knowing the Countryside Fund, another charity effort of his which supports rural family farms and communities, helped in the campaign to save the market. © stock.adobe.com/ink drop 28 Á 22-31.qxp_Layout 1 17/04/2023 15:44 Page 5CHARTERED CERTIFIED ACCOUNTANTS To find out how to get your business on the up visit www.dextersharpe.co.uk Offices in Boston, Bourne, Horncastle, Lincoln, Louth, Skegness & Spilsby We pride ourselves on providing a pro-active, friendly and accessible service. It’s come to count as just one more example of how King Charles’ continuous support endeavours have enriched this county and Britain in general. As the country gears up for his coronation – parties in the planning nationwide to celebrate – our new King has proved he is dedicated to change for the better, despite the scandal surrounding his name, personal and public hardships alike. A man of deep conviction and devotion to causes he cares for, his living legacy has prepared him for taking the entire United Kingdom into a brighter future. Of course, it’s worth remembering that in many ways the royal family is one of the country’s oldest and most well- established family businesses. Despite being royals, much of the royal family pays taxes, earns revenue and invests in their business as well as others, which in many ways mirrors the experiences of our numerous family businesses in Lincolnshire. They even have to deal with the same problems our family businesses do, such as succession issues, family members not wanting to continue in the business, and the occasional incident of a family member doing something scandalous and drawing negative attention to the company brand. All of this will be painfully familiar to family businesses across Lincolnshire, and that is a big part of what makes the royal family so relatable – they are a family, with all the good and bad parts that comes of involving familial relationships and drama into a business. Family businesses make up 87% of all businesses in the United Kingdom, and contribute almost a third of GDP, and employ over 10 million people. It’s no exaggeration to call family businesses the backbone of the country, and the backbone of Lincolnshire. What family businesses also do well is foster a sense of trust and community, © stock.adobe.com/ichrisdorney which the royal family and the late Queen especially were well-known for. When a figure becomes as recognisable as the brand, it adds a more human element than companies like McDonalds or TESCO can ever manage, and the same can be said of our local family businesses who are often run by the same people for many years. Faces become familiar, personalities become treasured, and a sense of trust can be fostered between individuals rather than corporate entities. This trust in family businesses and the experience passed down between them is seen all across Lincolnshire, not only from some of our biggest business names, but also to some of our very landmarks. Indeed, the famous landmarks that are the Dambusters Monument in Woodhall Spa, and the Pilgrims Fathers memorial in Boston, were both constructed and designed by a family business here in Lincolnshire – 30 Á 22-31.qxp_Layout 1 17/04/2023 15:44 Page 7 , !rPrrr,,r weed-freeFreshly-cut, URFITYTQUAL Y DE TOPSOIL YIT SPEE D QUAL Y !
