< PreviousThis time of year, the boundaries between home and garden blur, with one serving as an extension of the other. However, your current décor might be more in a winter mood with heavy fabrics, darker colours, and an altogether cosier feeling. But just tweaking your décor - be that wallpaper or ornaments – can have a dramatic effect. As far as the garden is concerned, invest in good quality outdoor furniture. A good rule of thumb to remember is if you wouldn’t have it in your home, don’t put it in the garden. There’s some great seating solutions that are purposefully designed to be used inside and out. I want to provide a garden that meets their brief and budget, while providing them with an amazing outdoor space. I am also aware of the changing trends within the world of gardens and outdoor spaces so that I can give clients unique ideas that they may not have considered. I also appreciate that a garden will be used by all members of the family and each one wants to use it in a different way. Most family gardens will have a trampoline and/or kids play equipment. A family garden inevitable needs some sort of play equipment but they can detract from the overall look and feel of a garden, especially if they are considered as an afterthought. However, with some careful consideration and clever planning you can have a kid friendly garden without compromising on your grown-up space. You could have a specific section of the garden just for the kids. Even with a small garden you can ensure that one part of it is for the kids. My advice would be to use the part of the garden that has the most shade. If you have a very sunny garden then you can create shade with trellis and climbing plants, or by using something like a shade sail. If you want to have a physical division between the kid’s area and the grownup’s one, then you can use a variety of things. Pots can be good, as these can be moved, but you could also use a living fence constructed from willow or wire mesh with climbing plants. Cut back the faded perennial plants. • Dead head your roses to keep them looking tidy. Leave the flowers in place if your rose produces attractive hips (seed pods). • Dead head sweet peas regularly to keep them blooming and water daily in dry weather. • Keep an eye out for pests on plants, early treatment is best. • If you need to prune your deciduous Magnolia, now is the best time to do it. • Cutting back growth in hanging baskets can encourage new flowers and foliage and will revive the display. Make sure you feed your baskets well after doing this. • Pick your courgettes while they are young to encourage more fruit, and pick your runner beans regularly to prevent them becoming stringy and to make room for developing pods. • Water your lawn during hot weather, particularly newly seeded or turfed lawns. • Turn the contents of your compost bin every month to keep it well aerated. • Keep bird baths topped up in hot weather. You could have a lawned area, however after a while this can look worn and muddy. The next option would be artificial lawn. This is a low maintenance option, and it will look good all year round, especially if you have children that play outside whatever the weather. A water feature can add a relaxing feel to a garden as the sound of water can be extremely calming. Furthermore, having water in your garden will help wildlife. The best water feature for child friendly gardens are ones that are self-contained therefore the reservoir and pump are covered. The style where the water runs over an object rather than forming a pool are safer. Another consideration for a child friendly garden is the plants that you use.
