It’s a challenge unto itself to muster the will to get out and exercise during winter, but surely things will be better come the summer? Well, going out for a run in the afternoon sun can literally be a death sentence, as well leading to possible dehydration and burnt skin. But then Noël Coward did sing that “mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun”. It’s no surprise that seasoned runners will don their trackies and trainers in the early evening, the better to escape the ferocity of the sun. This doesn’t always fit in with one’s schedule, though, particularly not this time of year where parties are a plenty and social gatherings take up almost all available space in the calendar. If it’s not a BBQ, there’s a wedding to attend. A way to circumvent these challenges whilst also staying in shape is to utilise the gym. There’s no shortage of gym and spa facilities across our county, offering all manner of workouts, from cross trainers and rowing machines, to an assortment of weights to lift. Many also offer swimming Fun in the sun Exercising in the heat can be a recipe for disaster, but there are a few simple things you can do to stay safe and keep fit and get the beach body you’re looking for. facilities, which is a most ideal exercise this time of year. When the mercury rises, there’s a temptation to jump into the nearest body of water, but just because the air is hot and still, that doesn’t mean the water will be. A home gym can offer the best of both worlds, catered exclusively for you with weights and equipment designed to achieve your personal fitness goals. Being in your own home means you can organise it around work and other commitments and use short, regular bursts of exercise. For freelancers working from home, this can be a real boon. But houses can be notoriously difficult to keep cool, especially when there’s not so much as a breeze outside. For this, fans are an absolute must. Of course, you could go a step further and have air conditioning installed. Exercising in the heat brings its own specific set of dangers, but there are ways to stay safe without compromising your hard-fought fitness. How else do you expect to burn off all those barbecues? 38-39.qxp_Layout 1 23/06/2021 07:56 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 39 HEALTH AND FITNESS © Shutterstock /L yubov Levitskaya 38-39.qxp_Layout 1 23/06/2021 07:56 Page 2Next >
