< Previous60 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY MAKING MOVIES T he city is a core part of Mind-Set, the first feature from Lincoln- based director Mikey Murray. Originally from Dundee, Murray is a Senior Lecturer in Film Production at the University of Lincoln. The Scottish BAFTA winner shot the majority of the 1 hour and 30-minute film in his home in Lincoln’s West End, as well as in various locations around the city. Despite its small budget, the comedy-drama has received rave reviews from critics and won the “Best UK Feature Film” award at the Manchester Film Festival in March. “I wrote something that I could make on a micro-budget and that I could shoot in my house,” Murray said. “I had an idea swimming about in my head for a while about this failed actor who lived with a struggling screenwriter and thought it would fit with what I wanted to do.” Working in the film industry for 17 years, Murray decided the time was right to create his debut feature film. However, he kept coming up against hurdles regarding funding. “It’s a chicken and egg thing with filmmaking,” he explained. “To get a feature made with a decent budget, you have to have already had a feature in some way. “So, I thought ‘I’ll go and make one myself first.’” Despite Murray describing Mind-Set as a “low-budget indie,” the cast and quality of the film belie its humble origins. Influenced by 1960’s new wave cinema and “kitchen sink” drama (a cultural movement that explores social issues against working-class backdrops), the film has been praised for its quirky humour and realism. “The humour is so relatable because it taps into the foibles of two ordinary people who are just trying to do their best. “People think that ‘low budget’ means it won’t be up to scratch, but I have confidence that [Mind-Set] is,” he said. “The story is strong, the acting is great, and it’s an interesting piece visually.” The film focuses on Lucy, a world-weary office clerk in an unhappy relationship, who finds herself on the verge of an affair with a work colleague. The flirtation distracts her from her real problems, but she’s not sure sex with another man is the answer. Murray was inspired to write the lead roles of Lucy and her partner Paul for actors Eilis Cahill and Steve Oram after the pair appeared on a panel at Indie Lincs. Lincoln’s annual film festival, Indie Lincs is run by Murray and Angela Waddell, his partner of 20 years. “[Steve and Lucy] said it’s great as an actor when someone writes something for you, so that was a catalyst,” he said. “I didn’t [initially] tell them I’d written the parts for them, but I sent them the script and they both loved it.” Peter Bankolé stars as Daniel, Lucy’s colleague and potential affair partner—a world away from his turn as diamond miner William Letso in season three of Peaky Blinders. Philip Stevens—an actor, director and fellow lecturer at the University of Lincoln’s School of Film and Media—also makes an appearance as a thespian called Chris. Jason Issacs, best-known for starring as Luscious Malfoy in the Harry Potter film LINCOLN MOVIE With its stunning cathedral and medieval architecture, it’s no surprise that Lincoln has been the backdrop for many famous films. From The Da Vinci Code (2006) to Netflix hit The King (2019), the historic city has received its fair share of screentime over the years. Murray explained: “He got back to me really quickly and said ‘I really love your script, it’s amazing, whatever I can do to help.’” Julia Deakin, a regular in Edgar Wright productions including Spaced (1999), Shawn of the Dead (2004) and Hot Fuzz (2007), also stars as Charity Pat, appearing in scenes filmed at the St Barnabas charity shop on Monks Road. Originally from Gainsborough, Deakin was thrilled for the opportunity to take on a role in her home county. “She’d never been asked to do a Lincolnshire accent before. I think that’s what sold it to her,” Murray said. Other shots around Lincoln include various locations on the University of Lincoln and Bishop Grosseteste campuses, St Barnabas’ charity shop on Monks Road and the Lincoln Hotel. Mind-Set premiered at Lincoln’s Everyman Cinema on 24th May. It will be touring UK cinemas throughout the summer, including screenings at the Broadway Cinema in Nottingham on 19th June, Stamford Arts Centre on 21st June and Phoenix Leicester on 22nd June. by Sophie Lloyd 60-61.qxp_Layout 1 20/06/2022 10:49 Page 262 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY what’s Due to the coronavirus outbreak, readers should be aware that events may have been cancelled or postponed. It’s great, it’s really nice to be out again and to be talking to people. It’s been such a strange time and it’s great to be able to connect. [As a performer], when there’s no people, there’s no anything. I was in my flat writing and going crazy. It was like breathing in without breathing out, my rhythm was screwed. You still kept busy during the pandemic, appearing on the Witcher: Blood Origin and writing your new drama-comedy Stuck. Yeah, I wrote a comedy of five, 15-minute episodes, which was going on [during COVID-19]. I also did a bit of filming. Stuck focuses heavily on big life changes. Did the pandemic influence the story? It fell over the time, and it [has] bled into it, as the time we were in was so weird. There’s no reference to COVID, but [it’s in] the atmosphere. Each show of your new tour We’ve Got This is different depending on the audience, what techniques do you use to get the audience involved? Whatever seems appropriate at the time. I’ll just chat to them, say hello my way. Have you been to Lincoln before? I definitely have, with the cathedral. It’s a very handsome town. Based on past experiences, what do you expect from a Lincolnshire audience? Violence, a lot of violence. Political prejudice and nudity, and I’m going to be very disappointed if any of those things don’t happen. We’ll have to go onto Twitter and let everyone know that nudity is expected. Interesting that that’s the thing you led with, I mentioned a few different things there. Each to their own. As a vegetarian, I’m guessing you’re not a fan of Lincolnshire sausage sandwiches? I’m not a sausage sandwich customer myself, I haven’t been for some time. You’re performing at the Engine Shed at the University of Lincoln. You seem to be popular amongst students? I think I have done alright with students over the years. I suppose Black Books is quite student-y in its look. I admire [students]. I think it’s tough to be a young person right now. There’s a lot coming at you, as I would describe it, from digital media compared to when I was a kid. Life was just so slow compared to this. It feels like the difference between pre- and post-electronification. If you’re 18 or 19, and you’ve grown up with a phone, the amount of stuff coming at you…your brain is going to be so different to the way mine was. In the vintage of my mind, we come from a time when so little was happening compared to now. Do you have any pre-show superstitions or rituals? Oh, I have my habits. People like to do certain things before you go on. I have to do exercise now, and I listen to music. Plus, buckets of drugs. Nothing like a lucky rabbit’s foot? I don’t chant or anything no, I just listen to music and have some crisps. By Sophie Lloyd Ahead of his show at the Engine Shed on 2nd June, we spoke to Dylan Moran about his new tour, sausage sandwiches and what he expects from a Lincolnshire audience.
