< Previous60 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY CARING L et’s make this clear from the beginning: if you regularly look after someone who can’t manage everyday tasks themselves, without being paid a salary to do so, then you qualify as a carer. You may or may not be supporting an elderly person with the practical tasks most would expect, such as dressing or bathing. But alternatively, or even instead, you could be emotionally supporting someone who would otherwise be unable to manage this themself, whether due to mental or physical illness. However you find yourself caring for an older person or supervising their daily life, acknowledge the fullness of this responsibility and the challenges it can bring for you. Of course, it’s always crucial to make sure anyone who needs care is provided for with thoughtful kindness, and attention to their every need. But it’s worthy of note that, to bring your best to the job, you need to look after yourself the same way. A commitment to self-care is an often overlooked must for any carer, when they can often grapple with their own emotional strain, including guilty or lonely feelings, whether directly because of the work they do or for other personal reasons. If this sounds familiar, you may well have supported someone you care for while battling through these same struggles at one point or several. It’s common for these difficult feelings to be passed between the cared for and their carer, especially if there’s an emotional connection with a friend or family member. It stands to reason then that, as much as you might take on the concerns of someone you care for, they may pick up on your own fears and worries too. Caring for someone can be emotionally exhausting, no matter how much you want to be A duty to care Lincolnshire Today explores the complexities, challenges, and rewards of looking after an elderly person. If you’re visibly drained or tired during a visit, there’s a good chance the person you care for will pick up on it and feel some level of guilt. Particularly if you’re significantly younger than an elderly person, it can be hard for them to feel like a burden. In these cases, it’s important to be honest. Don’t try to hide that you’re low or drained, even when it may seem the kinder choice. Better to respect the agency and intelligence of someone you care for, otherwise it’s easy for resentments to fester, negatively impacting emotional health on both sides and the relationship as a whole. Talking to each other about mutual or individual struggles can ease the burden for both of you, and even reveal ways you can better look out for each other when you’re providing emotional support. Knowing an elder can help you in return, helping the relationship be less one-sided, will likely do wonders for their self-esteem. Even on the best of days, it’s all too easy to feel that you could be doing more for the person you’re caring for. But keep in mind that the simple things, especially with older people, go further than you might think. Once they’re out of bed and ready, and you’ve perhaps done some housework or shopping, the main thing they’ll want is your company. When you know and love each other, a regular visit for some tea and a chat will be what makes their day. When you have the energy, take the time to keep each other’s spirits up by doing activities or hobbies together. Whether it’s memory scrapbooking, knitting or baking, these regular reminders of what an elderly person enjoys in life further will support their sense of identity, independence and purpose. A short walk around a nearby nature spot, some gentle pilates or yoga, or getting meals ready together can all provide essential gentle exercise and happiness-boosting social time for both of you too. Engaging each other in a fun task also provides opportunities for intellectual stimulation, which helps prevent depression and cognitive decline in the elderly. On a good day, you can let them pick the activity and let yourself be carried along by their enthusiasm. Sometimes this will be easier than others, but your encouragement is all the more important on days when low mood and lack of motivation need to be lifted to sustain their mental health and emotional wellness, both of which can ultimately impact the immune system and physical health. When you leave having lifted someone’s mood, you can feel better in yourself for the rest of the day too. It can be intimidating to feel isolated and alone, and many 62 ÁFuneral Services Our funeral homes provide the best facilities including private arrangement rooms and peaceful chapels of rest. The easiest way to alleviate this is to make sure they don’t have to ask, by simply being there as often as you can manage. Carers may also get weighed down by the same loneliness though, and can often feel they have no one to talk to about their experiences. If you ever have feelings like this which aren’t appropriate or kind to share with an elderly care patient, it’s important that you reach out for help. You might be able to recruit friends and family members as a support network, whether to talk or ensure that there is always someone available to provide care. It’s both unfair and unrealistic to expect that any one person will always be able to act as the sole caregiver for an elderly person. But if you can’t rely on the other people in your life, there are still resources open to you. Local support groups provide a safe space for carers to share their experiences and get support from others who understand, while devoted carer counselling can help you deal with the job’s emotional and psychological challenges. Respite care also provides temporary relief for carers, allowing them to take valuable rest and recuperation time for themselves. Your local carers service is your one stop for any of these services, or anything else you may need help with. If you feel alone, look up the service that covers your area. You’ll soon find the assistance you need to support your self-care, and the reassurance that there’s always someone there to help. © stock.adobe.com/Lumos spORDER FORM Yes, I would like to subscribe to Lincolnshire Today magazine for the next 12 months, with the first 3 issues only being £1.
