< Previous80 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY Having visited the beautiful county of Lincolnshire for over thirty years with my family and friends, amazingly I can still discover new places for great interest and enjoyment. This find is no exception as it introduced me to the ‘big sky’. Most of you will have heard of and, no doubt, spent time in the resorts of Skegness and Mablethorpe, but Sandilands offers a more leisurely glimpse of the east coast seaside. It can be found in the neighbourhood of Sutton-on-Sea in the East Lindsay district of the county, and forms part of the parish of Mablethorpe and Sutton. Whilst staying in the delightful little town of Woodhall Spa during half term in the autumn of 2018, I decided to explore some of the big sky country, where the countryside meets the coast. I travelled towards Skegness, and then followed the signs for Huttoft where I came across a bank of sand dunes, fringed with tall grasses. Here, I found numerous opportunities to drive through the dunes and park, free of charge, at the water’s edge. Pristine sand stretched as far as the eye could see and a number of dog walkers were enjoying the bracing sea air. Other visitors had parked their camper vans and were partaking of tea and sandwiches. A sign at the entrance to the beach informed me that Huttoft itself sports the world’s first cloud bar at Anderby Creek, to the right of my current position, and on a visit Sir John Betjeman described his experience as follows: “Grey tremendous the thunder / Hung over the width of the wold / But here green marsh was alight / In a huge cloud cavern of gold.” So, on this grey, blustery day in October I turned right and walked along the water’s edge. This brought me past numerous holiday homes, set high above the beach looking out to sea. After about forty minutes I reached Anderby Creek where I was able to view the sky from the cloud bar. As the ghostly forms of many, many wind turbines appeared on the horizon, I was spellbound by their majestic presence. Anderby Creek itself consists of a small hamlet with secluded caravan parks, and the sight of a café was very welcome. Here I purchased a delicious hot chocolate. Ample free parking is also available plus public toilets. This year I revisited the seafront at Huttoft but decided to turn left this time towards the resort of Sutton-on-Sea. It was August, and the big sky was an azure blue dotted with white, fluffy clouds. Kite flyers of all ages were taking advantage of the brisk breeze. A glorious day. I followed the purpose built cycle track for easy walking, as this is level and, on the Reader Hannah Johnson waxes lyrical about the beautiful coastal town of Sandilands. The big sky The big sky 80-81.qxp_Layout 1 19/08/2021 13:57 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 81 SANDILANDS day, was virtually sand free. The beauty of this path is that your view of the sea is unbroken, and there is no shortage of photo opportunities. I wandered along, enjoying the sight and sounds of the numerous sea birds, and presently I found myself in front of an assortment of brightly coloured beach huts. Many of these were in use, and families were spilling out of them onto the promenade to soak up the sun and enjoy a picnic. As I approached Sutton itself, I came across a lovely, old fashioned seaside scene. A group of musicians were entertaining a small crowd of tourists, and I imagine some locals too. They were all having a happy sing song, and I must admit I joined in. The fish and chip shop was very popular, but my treat that day was a ‘99’ which I purchased from a spotless and inexpensive beach shop. Not an amusement arcade in site – bliss! Whether it’s to somewhere in Europe or further afield, we’re finally leaving the realm of the staycation. COVID checks are still common at airports and a sign of how seriously countries are taking their health and safety, and it should be no different for us when thinking on where we’ll be leaving our pets. After providing us care Safe and sound © Shutterstock /Jayme Burrows Safe and sound LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 85 PETS CORNER 86 Á and attention during lockdown, they deserve the best. It’s hard to know what is best when it comes to leaving our beloved companions behind. The simple and harsh truth is that from their point of view, nothing other than you being there for them is what they want. Our pets naturally bond with us and want to be around us, so they’ll miss their owners no matter what, but perhaps rather than thinking what will make them happy (that will be your return) we should instead look at what is best for their happiness. By far the easiest, both for ourselves and for the animals, is to leave them with a friend or family member. Preferably someone they are used to interacting with, and whom they will feel comfortable spending time with. This is With lockdown being loosened and holidays back on the menu, we take a fresh look at how to ensure our beloved pets are happy and safe while we are jetting away. 85-87.qxp_Layout 1 20/08/2021 11:06 Page 1less likely to stress out an animal and you can always be assured your cat or dog will be getting the best care and attention possible. This isn’t always possible, however. Family might not have the facilities to host an animal, especially an active one, or they may not be available. In that case it might be prudent to look at animal boarding services or animal hotels. A lot of people avoid the word “kennel” nowadays because of the negative connotations, but it’s worth remembering that the ultimate goal is for your pet to be safe while you are away. They won’t be truly happy until you are back, so as long as they are healthy and looked after for the period, it’s only ever a temporary stay for them. Always check references when it comes to boarding services, including online reviews from other people who have used them. It’s also worth visiting to take a look at their facilities and make sure there isn’t anything that worries you. Any reputable boarding kennel should be happy to answer any and all questions you have as they should be confident in the care they show their wards, so see it as a warning sign if they avoid questions. It’s always best to take the time to find someone better reviewed and more willing to show you around. One thing to always keep in mind when considering a kennel is how social your animal is. This is especially important for dogs who are unused to playing or interacting with other dogs, as kennels will often have them interacting. If your pet has issues, aggression or fear, around other animals, then be sure to make the kennel operators aware so they can keep a close eye on them. A third option, and one not so commonly considered, is that of hiring a pet sitter. Treasured Memories Pet Crematorium & Chapel an association which monitors and ensures pet sitters are competent. This is the National Association of Registered Pet Sitters, and they can provide lists of all their registered sitters. Looking through this offers assurance of quality and care and makes for a happy middle ground between leaving pets with family and a kennel. Pets will usually have more personal care and attention this way since they won’t have to share it with 20-50 other animals. Again, it’s worth asking for references from other customers who have used a pet sitter, and we would also suggest inviting them around to see how your pet reacts to them. After all, if you are leaving them alone together for a week or two, it’s worth making sure they get along. Hiring a pet sitter is often more expensive than a boarding kennel, but you pay for the extra attention and care, so the added cost is to be expected. Always remember that a registered pet sitter should still have insurance, and that you are paying for a service. Therefore it is their duty of care to provide that as best they are able. Ask questions and don’t be afraid to check with them during your holiday to see how your pet is doing. 85-87.qxp_Layout 1 20/08/2021 11:06 Page 388 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY Aries Mar 21 - Apr 20 One way of improving your field of work is by using your natural charms.
