< Previous70 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY CARING and care staff onsite to attend individuals with care needs at any given time. Individuals themselves can take their destiny into their own hands, deciding on how little or often they want to participate in activities and to what care access they require. As social creatures, we’re at our best in a crowd where we can mingle, exchange ideas and see ourselves through the eyes of others. This is perhaps more pertinent as we get older. Early experiences are about discovering who we are, while later life is about enjoying and indulging those very things. It can be harder to find people to share the things we enjoy, especially as we get older. Communities such as those fostered in assisted living and care facilities are vibrant societies in their own right. If, as they say, a stranger is just a friend you haven’t met yet, then these facilities are full of friends. What good is having friends if you’re not going to spend time with them? It’s a sad fact of life that as we get older, our bodies and cognitive abilities begin to fail. Until there’s a major breakthrough in modern medicine, this is something we’ll all have to learn to live with. But that doesn’t mean we have to wallow in self- pity. It’ll come as no surprise that keeping fit and active helps to maintain a healthy body and mind, leading to longer, more fulfilling lives. Care and assisted living facilities will all offer activities of one kind or another. For those expecting hours of bingo, episodes of Countdown or old music had better think again. The only thing separating older folks from anyone else is experience. The fact, to some, this experience somehow means older people are infantilised or less than they used to be is ridiculous and downright insulting. In fact, the over 55s will likely have more widespread interests than their younger (and let’s face it, apathetic) counterparts. Exercise is a popular pursuit for the silver demographic, with gyms now a favourite stomping ground. Any decent gym will have a variety of activities and cater to different fitness levels. At one end of the spectrum there’s swimming or Pilates, to the more intense such as weightlifting. Hiking and cycling exist in between and are both enjoyable and beneficial pursuits, without being too harsh on the body. Getting older is an achievement, one we should all aspire to. For too long the over 55 demographics has been ignored, but no longer. The silver pound is more lucrative than ever and older folks are having the time of their lives. Assisted living can help add a support net to leading a long and happy retirement, one that if we’re lucky, we too can have. © stock.adobe.com/Halfpoint 68-71.qxp_Layout 1 23/08/2022 15:39 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 71 Bathing a problem? Two engines and two DB11 models are available – the coupe and the Volante convertible. Mind you; the Volante is only available as a V8, which is a 4.0-litre engine producing 639PS, getting from 0-62mph in 3.7-seconds, with a top speed of 208mph. Pick the coupe, and you can choose to swap the V8 for the V12 AMR engine – a 5.2-litre bi-turbo. It, too, produces 639PS, with a 0- 62mph time of 3.7-seconds, topping out at 208mph. Aston Martin DB11 Dynamic and seductive 76-77.qxp_Layout 1 23/08/2022 15:42 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 77 COUNTY MOTORING Both come with an eight-speed automatic, although you’ll get paddle shifters to feel more like Sebastian Vettel if you want. It is also worth noting that the V12 had around 30PS less power before 2019 – not that that makes it sluggish. And no prizes for guessing: the DB11 is rear-wheel drive. Of course. We tested the V12 AMR engine in the coupe. The DB cars are grand tourers, so they’re built to be cruising machines rather than race-track masters, regardless of the engine and body style. Nevertheless, the DB11 is not shy on a circuit. Naturally, you’ll notice the engine noise first, so it makes sense to start there. Well, this Aston Martin is rapid – and we mean it. The torque is incredible, even at low revs, so the DB11 surges off the line – and there’s next to no turbo lag, either. As a result, it sounds epic with the V12 burbling away, and there’s superb performance across the rev range. Ride comfort is on the rigid side, but it wouldn’t be a supercar if it weren’t. Nevertheless, adaptive dampers make a huge difference – especially in GT mode – to create a relaxing and comfortable ride. Finally, what does it cost to run the DB11? Well, the V8 manages 25.1mpg, producing 236g/km CO2. However, the extra fuel consumed by the additional four cylinders of the V12 pulls the consumption figure down to 21.1mpg, emitting 265g/km CO2. Still, the Aston Martin DB11 is lots of fun to drive. Moreover, it is perfectly capable of a Calais-to-Cannes run across the mainland to the French Riviera. 76-77.qxp_Layout 1 23/08/2022 15:42 Page 278 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY A CAPPUCCINO WITH… How does it feel to be remembered as one of the iconic female-fronted rock bands of the 90s? It feels a true honour and privilege. It was a revolutionary time for music, in that finally women who wrote their own songs and music were recognised and played on the radio, landing TV slots and on line-ups of all big festivals. Female- fronted bands were selling out our tours just as well as the all-male bands. We had a voice and a platform outside the normal conformity of manufactured pop music. We broke the glass ceiling of such a male-dominated industry, and almost 30 years later our songs are still reaching out to younger generations. Our songs ‘Ready to Go’ and ‘Drop Dead Gorgeous’ are still played around the world today and have been used in over 500 films, tv series, adverts and sports. Sunderland FC has used Ready to Go as their anthem for 25 years. It was recently used in the trailer for Captain Marvel and in the award- winning US TV show Yellow Jackets, which stars two of my favourite actresses. Pop star Olivia Rodrigo is currently covering Ready to Go on her world tour and said we were one of her favourite bands, bless her. How does it feel to be touring again after the pandemic? It feels overwhelming to be able to be back touring and headlining festivals after the pandemic. The music industry did not receive any help and all of us suffered. Not just artists, but our crew, technicians, venues and promoters. Now every show has a magical atmosphere and it’s fantastic to see so many people out again together enjoying live music. Ready to Go Ahead of Republica’s gig at the Drill Hall in Lincoln this September, we asked lead singer and 90s rock icon Saffron to share her thoughts on life, lockdown and her impressive career so far. 78-79.qxp_Layout 1 23/08/2022 15:43 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 79 A CAPPUCCINO WITH… You’re a qualified Mental Health and Social Care Officer, what was life like for you during the pandemic? I found myself on the f****** frontline as a critical keyworker throughout the pandemic. I also made my first short documentary film Music to Mental Health. Mental Health is so very important as we come out of the pandemic and I wanted to highlight that. The NHS and the healthcare industry have been brought to their knees and are in serious need of help funding and support. You’ve worked with some big names, such as The Prodigy and The Cure, what was that like? It’s been a dream to have worked with some of my favourite artists, bands, and icons who inspired me growing up. Especially with great, long-time close friends like The Prodigy. We all started making music at same time back in the late 80s and the early 90s on the underground ACIDHOUSE dance music scene. I sang a duet with Keith Flint on The Prodigy’s masterpiece of an album The Fat of The Land, called ‘Fuel my Fire.’ I did a duet with Robert Smith of The Cure called ‘Just Say Yes,’ which I got to perform live with them in Paris. Toyah Wilcox and I covered ‘Will You’ by Hazel O’ Connor as a message of love to her while she was in hospital. I’ve also worked with Gary Numan, Jeff Beck and DJ Carl Cox. Have you been to Lincoln before? I last visited Lincoln when my friend Bob Geldof called me and asked if we’d support him as he was reforming The Boomtown Rats. The tour with them was one of the best experiences of my life. Lincoln is a beautiful town. The crowd gave us such a warm reception last time we’re so excited to visit and perform at Lincoln Drill Hall on the 17th of September. © Svenja Block 78-79.qxp_Layout 1 23/08/2022 15:43 Page 2Next >
