On Friday 23rd September at 7:30pm, Louth Town Hall will be transformed into a showcase of the unexplained, from UFOs to conspiracy theories, local legends and more. Described by Daniels as “a bit like a lecture or a teatime TV show about the unexplained,” the Horncastle-based writer will be sharing “case files” from his long-term series, the Occultaria of Albion. Inspired by pulp novels, classic horror films, and “British Weirdness,” each edition of the Occultaria of Albion explores paranormal occurrences in fictional locations. Using audio and visual aids, Daniels will introduce the audience to the mysterious town of Low Scaraby, nestled in the Lincolnshire Wolds. For a small town, Low Scaraby has experienced its fair share of supernatural phenomena over the years. From a bizarre event involving an embroidery circle in the 60s to a mysterious creature known as the “Thackford Beast,” the Occultaria of Albion explores cryptids, time slips, hauntings and more. “There’s lots of interesting images and evidence that I show everyone, and this not only includes photographs but also video clips and some quite frightening audio clips as well.” Influenced by horror writers such as Death by PowerPoint Author Richard Daniels’ spooky new show takes over Louth Town Hall Guy N. Smith, public information films from the 1970s, and movies such as Night of the Demon (1957) and The Wicker Man (1973), Daniels says the show really puts the phrase “death by PowerPoint’ to the test.” “There might be jump scares, but I won’t reveal too much,” he said. “When I have performed this before there were members of St John’s Ambulance on hand as well as a vicar and a personal injury solicitor. “None of that will be available for the show in Louth, so just be warned!” 85.qxp_Layout 1 23/08/2022 15:45 Page 186 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY WHAT’S ON P assionate about writing and performing from a young age, Kieran’s career started with an amateur dramatics group in his hometown of Nottingham. “It really nurtured my interest in plays and writing and performing,” he explained. “I liked the escapable-ness that theatre and performing offers to someone like me who, growing up, was very insulated and was pretty un-confident.” Kieran and other fellow University of Lincoln students formed Chameleon 53 in 2017 and began performing small- scale adaptions of gothic horror stories. The group soon began working with other theatre companies, such as Third Angel (Sheffield) and China Plate (London) to deliver mentoring schemes to young people. In 2018, Kieran joined the EMERGE project in Boston, helping 12 to 16-year-olds to put on a small one-day arts festival, as well as putting on his own one-off solo show detailing the pilgrims’ voyage from Boston to America. Despite the competitive nature of the process, this is the second time Kieran and Matt have been successful in securing Arts Council Funding. Sadly, their project – The Foundation – suffered difficulties due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with a planned residency at the ARC Stockton Arts Centre cancelled. “I felt like that before the pandemic the wheels were in motion and then it just got obliterated,” Kieran said. “There was a point in July 2020 where I just wanted to pack it in – I Lincoln performer lands Arts Council funding for new show A talented graduate from the University of Lincoln has received Arts Council funding to develop his new show, Piece by Piece. Kieran Spiers, 26, who graduated with a BA Honours in Drama and Theatre in 2017, has been working with his writing partner Matt Miller to develop the solo performance, which he describes as “playful and thought-provoking.” 86-87.qxp_Layout 1 23/08/2022 15:46 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 87 WHAT’S ON felt deflated.” Instead of giving up, Kieran and Matt digitised their show into four webisodes, which were selected to appear at the UK New Artists Festival in Leicester earlier this year. For Piece by Piece, Kieran has finally had the opportunity to complete a residency at ARC Stockton. He spent a week at the venue in May 2022, taking advantage of the centre’s studio space, as well as undertaking seven days of research and development at Attenborough Arts Centre in Leicester. He said that Piece by Piece explores trust, and uses both storytelling and Kieran and Matt’s own experiences to engage the audience – along with Jenga blocks. “Working on a project like this with two weeks’ worth of funded time really gives resource and brain-space to be able to achieve creativity and problem-solve,” he explained. “Without Arts Council funding, a project like this would be extremely hard to mount. There is such value in funding arts and creative projects and I am certainly grateful to the Arts Council for their continued support.” 86-87.qxp_Layout 1 23/08/2022 15:46 Page 288 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY Aries Mar 21 - Apr 20 Take nothing for granted and never judge a book by its cover.
