< Previous20 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY GARDENS F or avid gardeners, a greenhouse is a sanctuary for sewing seeds and raising plants before they are transitioned outside. As agents for leading manufacturer Elite Greenhouses, Andrew Dams presents a wide variety of different models to suit every need and price point, to provide the perfect conditions to watch fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers grow. The family business, established by Andrew Dams in 1983, supplies and installs timber sheds, summerhouses, Elite Greenhouses, pergolas, and garage doors, having been placing their structures into Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Leicestershire, Rutland, Nottinghamshire, Northamptonshire and far beyond for decades, giving them a wealth of expertise and a long history of exemplary projects. With a show site in Billinghay, to offer inspiration and guidance on making the right choice to suit your tastes and requirements, Andrew Dams has created a special paved area where customers are invited to view selected greenhouse designs. This includes lean-to greenhouses as well as the traditional apex greenhouse. Each Elite greenhouse is available in various sizes and displayed in a traditional aluminium finish, with a choice of powder coated colours to meet all preferences also on display. Colours currently available from Elite include Berry, Black, Brown, Graphite, Green, Mocha, Navy, Olive, Stone, and White. Manager, Daniel Dams shared: “The workmanship that goes into an Elite greenhouse is second to none. Just like us, Elite has been run as a family business, in their case for 70 years, which really appeals to us. “All Elite greenhouses are made of aluminium to prevent rust and ensure their longevity, and all clips are stainless steel. The nuts and bolts are tested to be two and a half times stronger than normal aluminium bolts and there are A gardener’s haven A top-quality greenhouse is central to the success of a gardener’s growing, whilst providing a space for respite from the outside world. three different glazing options available. This allows customers to choose from traditional horticultural glass (which we also stock for clients requiring replacement panes), toughened glass (which all our show models use), or polycarbonate glazing. “All glazing is cushioned by neoprene beading to offer heightened wind resistance, with temperature controlled opening windows and louvres also available, keeping greenhouses well- ventilated during hot months.” Supply and assembly by the experienced Andrew Dams team is included in standard prices, however self- assembly supply can be organised at a competitive price, within a 70-mile radius. The fact is, it’s not yet fully understood what causes breast cancer. A number of contributing factors are already known, such as the unique gene set you inherit from family and ancestors, your living environment, and your choices and activities in day to day life. But there is no scientific answer tying these disparate aspects into a universal or easily identifiable cause. Therefore research is constantly ongoing, with Breast Cancer Now alone investing over £255 million to date, and £26 million worth of research projects employing cutting-edge science to seek better treatment and the end-goal of a cure. These projects are also looking into how best to prevent breast cancer, help people live with it and support them even when they’ve been deemed free of the disease. Breast Cancer Awareness Month was founded as an initiative back in October 1985, when the American Cancer Society partnered with anti-breast cancer Beating breast cancer pharmaceutical company Imperial Chemical Industries. Even back then, the main goal of the month was to make the masses aware of how important mammograms are for spotting breast cancer early, and more successfully treating it. Now it has become a global movement, with countries around the world organising fundraising events and public displays of support for the cause. You too can be part of the fight through one simple act of self-care, checking your breasts regularly at home for any unusual changes. Go through the three steps of TLC - touch, look, check. If anything feels or looks unusual, check your symptoms with your GP. They may find there’s nothing to worry about but catching potential symptoms and seeing your doctor as soon as possible will fast-track you towards treatment if cancer is present. Even if not, making sure will be a weight off your mind. It’s always a good thing to ‘know your normal’, so give your breasts that TLC regularly. Even more importantly, be aware that anyone can be at risk. There is no such thing as being too young, as 6,000 women aged 45 or younger are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the UK. You 24 Á October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an event that signal boosts fundraising for cancer care, research and prevention every year. Men, trans and non-binary people can all be at risk, however slim the chance, as we all have at least a small amount of breast tissue. Having less decreases the risk, but never negates the possibility. Around 350 men are diagnosed in the UK every year. Women and anyone assigned female at birth, including trans men, should attend a breast screening every three years if they’re aged 50 or over. It’s NHS procedure to invite anyone aged 50-70 meeting these criteria to a screening but do contact your GP if you’re due and don’t get an invite. If you want to go that extra step further and help spread the word or raise money for breast cancer awareness, there are plenty of opportunities to do this at events across the country, or from the comfort of your home. Breast Cancer Now organises Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and each year holds a Wear It Pink day so anyone can wear their support for the cause. This year it falls on October 21st, so save that date and join the fundraisers who have Breast Cancer Now tickled pink with £37.5 million raised so far. At home or in your local community, you could pick a theme, make it a pink movie night, or bake as many pink cakes as possible for a coffee morning. At school or at work, make it a real event and encourage as many people as possible to wear anything pink, so all together your support will be impossible to ignore. Kids can bring in a small donation of £1 or £2, while adults can set up a JustGiving page online and share their efforts far and wide to raise as much as possible. This is an event anyone can get stuck into, so whoever you’re raising with, make as big a splash as you can. If you’re still stuck for ideas or want to push the boat out even more, Breast Cancer UK has a treasure trove of fun and challenging suggestions. Ever considered doing a sponsored skydive? They say it does the mind and body good doing something that scares you. Perhaps you could take on Breast Cancer UK’s Step Out, which challenges you to walk 300,000 steps in 30 days. That’s 10,000 steps a day, with all your sponsors’ support behind you. You could even think of it as a mental challenge as much as a physical one, weighing your own effort and fear against that of someone diagnosed with cancer. A little like braving a sponsored head shave - another fundraising idea - these challenges are designed to help you empathise with someone who faces their fear every day. What will you challenge yourself to accomplish in the battle against breast cancer? Still, it sometimes isn’t possible for everyone to leap out of a plane for charity. Whatever the reason, there are quieter options that are no less meaningful or powerful for their subtlety. Leaving a one-off or monthly donation all means that more research can be funded, and that more people with breast cancer, or who love someone with the disease, can get the sometimes life-saving support they need whenever they need it. If you’ve lost someone dear to you because of breast cancer, consider a funeral collection, or leave a memorial donation in your will. Not only does it honour their memory, but it’s an investment in a hopeful future where nobody need suffer with the disease. Not everyone has money to spare right now. That’s understandable too, and there are still options open in this case. For you, that might be donating unwanted clothing, jewellery, homewares or other items to a cancer research and support-focused charity shop near you. Or you can always be a volunteer, which is the beating heart of any charity, as volunteers provide boots on the ground for spreading awareness and collecting donations. However you can help, the smallest gesture will be accepted with open arms. © stock.adobe.com/LStockStudio28 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY FASHION As the leaves change colour and fall, our fashion changes too.
