This number is incredible given the reality of how much dirt and grime accumulates, including dead skin, and the impact it can have on someone’s complexion. Many men take it as granted that a shower would do it for them, but that’s simply not the case. Washing the face agitates the skin, either with bare hands or a cloth, and helps to exfoliate in a way that shower water splashing down on the face will not do. You should cleanse twice a day according to experts, once in the morning to wipe off grime accumulated in the night, and again in the evening to wipe off grime accumulated through the day. Exfoliation, however, need not be so common. A lot of products will suggest daily or twice daily but that’s them trying to sell more product by making it run out faster. Your skin regenerates, but it doesn’t regenerate that quickly. Many experts say twice a week is ideal. Fall into a routine or even take an approach of beauty Men’s A lot of beauty tips are made exclusively for women and men can sometimes feel left out and unsure what to do or confused as to whether it’s even “manly” to care about their appearance at all. However, the most famous and best-looking men on Hollywood all make use of beauty regimes, and even makeup in some cases. Delving into the mysterious and often hush-hush world of male beauty starts with some very simple habits. Hydrating Serums Hydrating serums are more and more common on the men’s shelves of supermarkets. You may have seen hyaluronic acid, which typically comes with a small pipette where you dab one or two drops into the hand and rub into the face between the cleanse and moisturising steps. These serve to sink into skin and pull in moisture and are great for men who haven’t really bothered with a skincare regime before and want to combat years of dry skin. Eye Creams Men and women suffer in equal measure the joys of dark shadows under the eyes, giving a tired and sunken look. This happens because the skin around your eyes is some of the more delicate on the body. These creams are densely packed with means to fortify the skin there and leave them feeling and looking a little tighter and brighter. Obviously, these creams are NOT to touch the eyes despite their names and are usually dabbed on by finger beneath and above “every three days” if that is easier. It might also be best to exfoliate in the evening so your skin can recover while you rest and, if you weren’t aware, it’s cleanse first, exfoliate second and then moisturize. Moisturisers are more misunderstood. They’re not actually about giving moisture back to your skin as that’s not needed. It’s about protecting the moisture you naturally have. That’s why a lot of moisturisers have SPF to block out the sun – because that can cause your skin to dry up, which will cause damage over time. This also means you should ideally have two different moisturisers, one with SPF to put on in the morning and another “night cream” to use at night. Night creams tend to be lighter and softer, and sometimes less oily, because you don’t need as heavy-duty protection when sleeping. Also, cleanse the neck! Many men leave it out, finding it inconvenient, but the neck – the throat, especially – is a visible part of any look, and people will notice it. LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 39 HAIR & BEAUTY © stock.adobe.com/Fractal Pictures your closed eyes, then left to sink into the skin. They’re good to be applied once a day, or twice if you’re starting out, but remember not to use so much as they need to be dabbed on and absorbed. The skin can only absorb too much so you’ll be smearing away excess and that can agitate the sensitive skin there. Toners Toners are not quite so simple, sadly. They’re meant to balance the pH level of skin and are therefore only necessary (or even useful) for those with an imbalance. If you have particularly oily skin then you’ll likely qualify, and you may also if you’re introducing a new skincare regime that you haven’t ever done before, as you’ll be putting a lot of chemicals on your face that will skew your pH anyway, so bringing it back to neutral isn’t a bad idea. For many men, starting with a proper cleanse, exfoliate and moisturise will be more than enough to start seeing results. However, we can’t stress enough that visible changes will only come if a regime is stuck to, and that you should do your research on products. While supermarkets will sell them all in convenient places, many products that claim to “cleanse and exfoliate” at the same time are not doing that properly. They may be cleansing and offering a tiny amount of exfoliation, but not to any notable degree. In the same way that cleaning products have to say 99.9% of germs because they cannot guarantee the death of all, some beauty products can claim to “exfoliate” even if they only do so by 1%. A proper exfoliation agent is one that can be used once or twice a week and will often be quite heavy duty. Daily exfoliation agents are comparatively weak and can even damage your skin. Luckily, there are more sites available now offering good advice to men on their skincare, and plenty of reviews online with YouTube and other sites going into individual products. Men’s beauty is evolving, and no longer has a stigma of being feminine. Many of the most famous men are rigorous in their regimes, and this has helped to make it commonplace. © stock.adobe.com/MaridavNext >
