C hristmas in a care home needn’t be some ghastly experience, but truly a celebration; one that, with the right precautions and safety measures in place, should be looked forward to, not shunned. Staff are invested as much as the residents and, during this time of year, it’s the little things that can have the biggest impact. Study after study has highlighted that people live longer, fuller lives amongst others than those on their own. Care homes are communities, where lasting friendships are forged, where residents can indulge their hobbies – or find new ones – free from the stresses of work commitments and responsibilities. As the elderly are one of the most vulnerable groups of society, care homes are still employing robust measures to ensure the safety of their residents – because even four or more years after the COVID lockdown, the risk associated with those who are older has not diminished. That said, it’s still safe to be with family or take them out for a day – or to spend the day with them if their medical needs don’t allow much free movement. Many doctors agree that it’s Christmas in care 64 Á © stock.adobe.com/Halfpoint64 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY CARING better for an elderly person to have a higher quality of life than it is for them to be kept under lock and key for the sake of their health. When it comes to Christmas day, nothing compares to the lunch (or dinner, if that’s your preference). The best care homes possess excellent catering teams, ensuring that your elderly loved ones sit down to a truly scrumptious yuletide meal. It might even be better than yours. Of course, there’s more to Christmas than food, and good company is also important. This is one factor that care homes can provide more readily than anyone living at home, because it’s very easy for staff to arrange a party for multiple guests at once. It may also be safer and warmer for our loved ones in a home. Not to get political (because no party ever really helps in this regard) but sky-high fuel costs and a possible reduction on help for gas bills will leave many older people short of money this Christmas. The need to buy gifts for family won’t help, and some may be considering turning off their heating to cope. We needn’t say how inadvisable this is with winters getting colder and colder. There is still help available for those who need it most, but support from the government is never easy to achieve, and there’s always a sense that the regulations are made confusing on purpose – so that elderly people will give up rather than try and get help. That’s why it’s important to keep asking if they have, and to call on behalf of a loved one if they need it. Of course, care homes will make sure all their guests are cared for – and they offer more than permanent housing in many cases. Respite care can be available for when a family wants to go away on holiday but cannot take an elderly relative, either because they aren’t fit to travel or they’ve been advised by a doctor not to. Leaving them home alone is an awful idea for many reasons, but the last thing they will want is for a family to cancel their holiday plans over them. No one wants to see themselves as a burden like that. That said, doubtless many will be bringing elderly relatives home or spending Christmas in care homes this year. No one should have to be alone for Christmas, no one should have to be apart from their families. For many, that’s the reality of the season, whether that’s owing to their careers or for other reasons, but your elderly relatives shouldn’t have to rank among those numbers. After a life well lived, surely all we want is to simply enjoy our final years in the peaceful company of those we love with fine food, drink, and entertainment. It’s not a lot to ask now, is it? 66 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY onwhat’sLincoln November 1 Autumn Lights - Lincolnshire Showground Autumn Lights is a family event featuring live entertainment, fairground rides and street food stalls.
